The Voynich manuscript has, for centuries, represented one of the great literary mysteries – written in the fifteenth century, it comprises 102 leaves, which depict plants, astrological systems and bathing women. Yet the text that accompanies the images is written in an unknown script; and despite the best attempts of cryptologists to crack this supposed code, the language has remained an enigma. In this week's issue, H. R. Woudhuysen recounts the history of this cryptic manuscript.
The essayist here is Henry Ruxton Woudhuysen, FSA, FBA, a British academic specialising in Renaissance English literature. He is the current Rector of Lincoln College, Oxford, having been appointed in 2012. He was previously Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at University College London. He gained a DPhil degree from the University of Oxford, in 1981.
