Threads, Meta's answer to Twitter, is here.
Launched on July 6, the new standalone app is dedicated to "sharing text updates and joining public conversations", according to Meta(opens in a new tab). This is essentially what Twitter offered, prior to owner and CEO Elon Musk's takeover and several questionable choices unrelentingly aimed at pushing users toward a paid Twitter Blue subscription.
Built by the Instagram team and directly linked to your Instagram account, Threads allows posts that are up to 500 characters long, which can include links, photos, GIFs, and videos up to five minutes in length. We don't lump Twitter in the same privacy bracket as, say, Facebook. But like any social network, Twitter is vulnerable to oversharing, data leakage and unintended consequences. We take a look at T...

Data uses include measuring happiness levels in cities based on Twitter images shared.
Twitter has a 200-million-strong and ever-growing user base that broadcasts 500 million updates daily. It has been lauded for its ability to unsettle repressive political regimes, bring much-neededaccountability to corporations that mistreat their customers, and combat other societal ills (whether such characterizations are, in fact, accurate).
Now, the company has taken aim at disrupting another important sphere of human society: the scientific research community.
In response, computational epidemiologists Caitlin Rivers and Bryan Lewis have proposed guidelines for ethical research practices when using social media data, such as avoiding personally identifiable information and making all the results publicly available. . Whether or not Twitter and the scientists who have access to the company's data follow such guideposts, one thing is clear—the trend of mining social media data for various purposes won’t be tapering off anytime soon.

IBM développe actuellement un outil qui lui permet d'établir un profil psychologique des utilisateurs de Twitter, en sondant les profondeurs de l'âme à travers les messages de 140 caractères publiés par les internautes.
Earlier, we posted about Twitter's new tailored advertising announcement. We applauded Twitter's commitment to privacy by allowing two opt-out mechanisms—both an internal setting and your browser's Do Not Track capability. To make things easier for you, here's a guide to opt out of Twitter's tailored advertisements and how best to protect yourself from online tracking. Opting out of Twitter's tailored advertisements

Welp, looks like your tweets really aren't protected by law. After months of haggling with the courts, Twitter has finally turned over the protected tweets of Occupy Wall Street protestor Malcolm Harris after his arrest in October.

If there's one thing we can count on Meta to do, it's copy another app. Following the latest stretch of tweeting confusion, Instagram's Twitter competitor, Threads, has arrived.
The new app, which launched today for iOS(opens in a new tab) and Android, is basically exactly like your old app, Twitter, but with less Elon Musk and more Mark Zuckerberg. Each post can be up to 500 characters long, in comparison to Twitter's 280 or Twitter Blue's exorbitant 25,000, and each Threads post can include links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long — twice as long as Twitter's two and a half minutes but far shorter than Twitter Blue's two-hour-long(opens in a new tab) ability. Twitter has warned a number of users that they may have been the target of a state-sponsored attack. The company has apparently sent the warnings by email to more than twenty users, all of which contain the same details. The warning begins: “As a precaution, we are alerting you that your Twitter account is one of a small group of accounts that may have been targeted by state-sponsored actors. We believe that these actors (possibly associated with a government) may have been trying to obtain information such as email addresses, IP addresses, and/or phone numbers.” It continues: “At this time, we have no evidence they obtained you account information, but we’re actively investigating this matter. We wish we had more we could share, but we don’t have any additional information at this time.”

In order to determine that I was attempting to log in from an "unusual" location, Twitter must be keeping a history of my previous IP addresses to compare against. This type of security feature is not new, Facebook has been doing this sort of thing for years already. But I've not yet seen it from Twitter. (A few years ago, Twitter seemed to be actively against such an idea.) Unlike Facebook, I don't see anyplace from which I can download my own connection history. Previous IP addresses used are available to those who download a Facebook archive. But IP address information isn't in the Twitter archive that I downloaded today.
So then the questions I now have for Twitter is this: for how long have my connections been logged and tracked? And when will a copy of the data be available to me?

As a result of the growing NSA revelations, the social microblogging site is upping its defenses by planning to encrypt its direct messaging Service.
"There should be millions of Twitter users that have signed in with Twitter into third-party applications. Some of these applications might have gained access to and might still have access to Twitter users private direct messages," he points out, and advises users to check third-party applications permissions and revoke the apps to which they never gave permission to access their DMs.
