Periods in the Media

Periods in the Media | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
What's up with the way that the media portrays menstruation? If all you knew about periods came from what you see on TV and in magazines, you'd think they're either hilarious or terrifying. Watch Kat Lazo in this video where she discusses why this misrepresentation is dangerous for us if it causes embarrassment and uneasiness to the point of wanting to hide menstruation.

Discussing same sex relationships should not be treated as a sensitive or controversial issue. | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

For a while now I have agreed with Simon Blake’s (CEO of Brook Charity) assertion that non heterosexuality should not be treated as a sensitive issue in education.  I’d also add in we need to stop treating such topics as “controversial”. To do so causes teachers to worry and tiptoe around such conversations and only reinforces stigma.

Stanley Siegel, LCSW – Making Sex Positive Choices

Stanley Siegel, LCSW – Making Sex Positive Choices | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Most of us, gay and straight alike, feel that having a life-long partner is preferable to going through life alone or with a series of affairs or short-term relationships. There is much in our culture that supports this notion, from the large number of tax benefits given to married couples, to the countless themes of Sunday morning church services. And while we idealize this idea in movies, television shows, novels and fairy tales, forging a successful long-term relationship is quite another story.

Statistics over the last few decades show that nearly half of all marriages end in divorce though the number has been decreasing slightly in recent years. Among the most commonly reported reasons are problems related to sex, especially the loss of intimacy and infidelity. Yet we still underestimate the importance of sex in our relationships, placing it low on the list of priorities. Collectively, we fail to appreciate sex as a spiritual and psychological affirmation of life.

The Greatest Generation (In Bed) – How Millennials Are Changing the Sexual Landscape

The Greatest Generation (In Bed) – How Millennials Are Changing the Sexual Landscape | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Barely a day seems to pass without one of the ‘wise old men’ who dominate the editorial columns writing a dubiously- researched opinion piece on how the Millennial generation is dangerously apathetic, hedonistic, and lazy. The American Conservative recently published an article bemoaning the fact that over a quarter of men and women under 30 don’t bother to affiliate with any religion and are therefore, in their words, the “decadent” generation.

They’re absolutely right. By the standards of our parents, we’re all little Caligulas. And that’s our greatest strength.

As the generation with the least up-tight views on sex since the ’60s, our sexual laissez-faire is changing the way society treats both sex and identity, entirely for the better. Here’s how.

The Couples Therapy Expert Esther Perel Takes On Sex and Sexuality

The Couples Therapy Expert Esther Perel Takes On Sex and Sexuality | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
Esther Perel has become a go-to speaker on sexuality and relationships in the world of couples therapy as well as in the luxury self-actualization set.

Since 2006, when Ms. Perel published a best-selling book, “Mating in Captivity,” she has become a go-to speaker on sexuality and relationships in the world of couples therapy as well as in the luxury self-actualization set. She frequently runs discussions at resorts during events that the self-improvement mogul Tony Robbins holds for his Platinum Members, among the biggest donors to his foundation. This month, she spoke at Omega’s winter learning vacation in Costa Rica. Her 2013 TED talk, the “Secret to Desire in a Long Term Relationship,” had one million hits in the first two weeks it was posted, taking on an apparent epidemic of low-libido marriages in what is theoretically the least repressed era in modern history. (That may be part of the problem: “How can you desire what you already have?” Ms. Perel often asks in her talks.)

Perhaps not since Dr. Ruth commandeered American airwaves in the 1980s has there been a public figure with so much of an audience for her work on human sexuality. But if Dr. Ruth was trying to talk explicitly about the mechanics of sex in a pre-Lewinsky, relatively tame media environment, Ms. Perel has captured attention in the era of the oversexed. Instead of offering more explicitness, she writes and talks about the aspects of sexuality that can’t be captured on a screen, the hidden, psychological states that do or do not set the mechanics in motion.

Red: "Non-Binary" Person Rejects Male/Female Gender Duality : Indybay

Red: "Non-Binary" Person Rejects Male/Female Gender Duality : Indybay | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
Red, who works at San Diego's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center, identifies themselves as non-binary: that is, neither male nor female but somewhere in a "cloud" of genders that rejects the idea that there are only two human gender identities, male and female. They gave an interview for the August 2011 Zenger's Newsmagazine in which they (you refer to a non-binary person as "they," "them" or "theirs" even if you're only referencing one individual) explained these new, unfamiliar concepts of gender that are beyond the experience of most people, including most Transgender people. Red and Zenger's editor/publisher Mark Gabrish Conlan discussed how both gender identity and sexual orientation are far more complex and fluid than either the straight or the Queer mainstream is willing to acknowledge.

Because we don’t speak about sex, there is no socially acceptable language surrounding it. | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

So the language of porn has jumped in to fill that space, and that’s an issue, because in a male-dominated industry the language of porn is all too often male-generated. The person who coined the term “finger blasting” didn’t have a vagina. The person who coined the term, “getting your ass railed” never got their ass railed. Pounding, hammering, banging… And language matters, because when the only language you have available is abusive and one-directional, in terms of having things done to you, it creates a very weird view of how sex works.

The 7 Most Preposterous Sexual Positions People Claim to Use

The 7 Most Preposterous Sexual Positions People Claim to Use | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

According to a pamphlet I found in the bathroom of the library downtown, there's a lot more going on in sex than you may have guessed. For instance, did you know you can do it different ways? And with someone else? It's quite the circus. Grab some popcorn and a clown!

In my limited sexing, I've enjoyed a few of the different fruits the Humptree has to offer, but there's a lot out there, and some of it seems like it was made up just so someone could say they did it, with little consideration for the practical and, dare I say, sensual benefits of such a maneuver. Let's take some time to go over some of the sexual repertoire that just doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense, and see if we can't figure out why.

Although we do have hard and clear evidence - archeologically speaking - that the veneration of women, of the yoni, and of Goddesses have been the primal and primary form of religion around the globe, it has been the East - specifically ancient India with its Tantric teachings - where this seems to have found its most exalted and open expression.

Sexualities: Identities, Behaviors, and Society focuses on gender, using multiple disciplines, international populations, and theories to explore sexualities. The readings-including several written specifically for this volume-will grab students' attention. Topics range from the motivations of X-rated movie stars to vibrator use to gendered sexual fantasies. Same-sex orientation, people of color, and global populations are considered throughout. Sexualities: Identities, Behaviors, and Society opens with classical and contemporary theories about sexualities, including selections by Freud, Kinsey, and Fausto-Sterling. Subsequent chapters explore the ways in which we learn about sexual activities and develop sexual identities, both heterosexual and same-sex. The discussion expands to include sexual adaptations, sexual media, intersections with violence, and sexual education. The text ends with a key question: How will the next generation be taught about sex?

The Ways of Lust

The Ways of Lust | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Do images of naked or sexualized people really cause us to “objectify” them?

...

We showed the pictures to our subjects and asked questions about these individuals — about the extent to which they were seen as purposeful agents, with the capacity for self-control, moral action and planning, and about the extent to which they were seen as experiencing beings, capable of feeling pain, pleasure, fear, rage, joy and desire. Consistent with the objectification view, naked people were thought of as having less agency. But contrary to this view, they were also thought of as being enhanced experiencers, capable of stronger feelings and greater emotional responses.

Relatedly, in another study of ours, in which participants gave people electric shocks, we found that the participants gave milder shocks to people who were partially undressed versus fully dressed, presumably because the flash of skin makes us more sensitive to others as experiencing beings.

There's more to decide than "art" or "porn" when viewing nude humans...

Sex as Exercise - New York Times (blog) | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The issue of sex as exercise, however, has remained largely unexplored. “There are these myths,” including that sex burns at least 100 calories per session, said Antony D. Karelis, a professor of exercise science at the University of Quebec at Montreal who undertook a study, published in PLOS One in October, to look at how much energy is actually exerted during sex. “But nobody had tested” those assumptions.

The journalist on researching lust, the myth of female monogamy, and why “voyeurism is essential to good writing.”

...Among the lessons Bergner says he gleaned from his research is that “women’s desire—its inherent range and innate power—is an underestimated and constrained force.” More controversially, he makes the case that “one of our most comforting assumptions, soothing perhaps above all to men but clung to by both sexes, that female eros is much better made for monogamy than the male libido, is scarcely more than a fairy tale.”

Less Women Watch Pornos Online; Here’s Why (NWS) | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Last month, the Pew Research Center released a report on the online viewing habits of 1,003 Americans. Among Pew’s findings, no surprise, is that watching online videos has increased ~ as has the number of those who admit to watching adult videos, i.e. porn, which is now at 12%. (If that number seems low to you, as it apparently did to Pew, Pew notes that “this may reflect a reluctance to report the behavior among some adults.”) But where it gets more interesting is in the gender split: 25% of men admitted to watching adult videos, but only 8% of women did.

In the largest, most in-depth study to date on regret surrounding sexual activity, a team of psychology researchers found a stark contrast in remorse between men and women, potentially shedding light on the evolutionary history of human nature...

“Prior sex researchers have focused primarily on the emotion of sexual attraction in sexual decisions,” Buss says. “These studies point to the importance of a neglected mating emotion —sexual regret — which feels experientially negative but in fact can be highly functional in guiding adaptive sexual decisions.”
