Adult Backwash's Place In Sex Blogging History

Adult Backwash's Place In Sex Blogging History | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

A few weeks ago, the brave Dangerous Lilly started a conversation about the history of sex blogging. Not long after that, GlamKitty (GK) (who did participate in the adult side of BW as a member of The Unholy Trinity) began waxing nostalgic about Backwash.com in general. It was these two conversations (one digital, one real world) which prompted me to get involved in the Backwash Reunion and agreeing to run Dark Wry Toast as a resurrection, of sorts, of Adult Backwash.

While I (impatiently) waited for GK to make her post, so that I wouldn’t have to repeat too much, I thought about the reasons Adult Backwash deserves to be remembered.

nterpreting Gender and Sexuality at Historic Sites

On a 2013 study trip to historic sites in and around Boston, hosted by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, participants were struck by the wide variety of ways they saw gender and sexuality interpreted--or in some cases, not interpreted at all. The trip prompted a number of interesting questions, which representatives from the Pew Center together with members and friends of the National Collaborative for Women's History Sites would now like to raise and discuss with other public historians. Toward that end, a session will explore these issues at the upcoming meeting of the National Council on Public History.

The questions to be considered there include: Where is the interpretation of gender and sexuality in 2013/2014? How do we move beyond the "just add women and stir" model of gender interpretation? How do we build on the progress made at a small number of historic sites now interpreting LGBT history? What is the future of gender and sexuality at historic sites?

Please take a moment to reflect on these questions, and help inform a larger discussion

History of the Yoni in World Faith

History of the Yoni in World Faith | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Although we do have hard and clear evidence - archeologically speaking - that the veneration of women, of the yoni, and of Goddesses have been the primal and primary form of religion around the globe, it has been the East - specifically ancient India with its Tantric teachings - where this seems to have found its most exalted and open expression.

Servant of God, or Prostitute?

Servant of God, or Prostitute? | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The Devadasi, a centuries-old caste of sacred temple priestesses, struggles to have it's own renaissance. One woman leads the way...

The origins of the practice are often disputed, but historians agree that in India by the 10th century this caste of sacred temple servants enjoyed great wealth & property as signs of respect & clout.

Considered married to the Hindu deities, the Devadasi were talented dancers, singers & even viewed as political advisors. At the core of Devadasi faith is the belief all men are incarnations of the male deities & so in addition to performing sacred temple ceremonies, Devadasis offered sexual services. In the act of making love, a man & a Devadasi enact the sacred marriage of god & goddess which therefore allows them to become divine themselves.

At Swords’ Point: Humor As Weapon | The Comics Journal

At Swords’ Point: Humor As Weapon | The Comics Journal | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Humor is a big joke on us all. It’s one huge paradox. While it seems unconditionally benevolent, stimulating laughter and good feeling, it is often cruel, destructive, and manipulative.

So says Betty Swords. And she should know. For over twenty-five years, starting in 1955, she was a professional humorist. She sold her cartoons to the major magazine markets, including Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home Journal, Changing Times. She also produced a considerable quantity of humorous writing for such publications as McCall’s, Modern Maturity, Christian Science Monitor, and others. And beginning in 1976, Swords taught college courses in the power of humor and lectured widely on the subject.

...And then I realized that the punching bag was always a woman. “Marriage is seen as bad,” she went on, recollecting the experience as we talked on the patio in back of her Denver home in June 1995. And she cited examples of one-liners to prove her point:

Married life is great—it’s my wife I can’t stand.

He was unlucky in both his marriages—his first wife left him. And his second one won’t.

A bachelor’s last words—I do.

“Marriage is seen as horrible because it meant that the man had lost his freedom,” she continued.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Along with a profile on a great woman, there are well-articulated and documented issues of gender bias that are still around today.

Grassroots 1960s Push Reformed Women's Health Care | Womens eNews

Grassroots 1960s Push Reformed Women's Health Care | Womens eNews | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The women's health movement of the 1960s and 1970s transformed the doctor-patient relationship and yielded the novel concept that women can take control of their own health, says Laurie Edwards in this excerpt from "In the Kingdom of the Sick."...

For women, this change started with the radical notion that they had a right to know about their own bodies, had a right to control their own health care and belonged in medical schools where they could fully participate in the very health care decisions that have such significance in their lives. The grassroots women's health activism that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s was fostered by an equally diverse group of advocates, among them middle-class white women, middle- and working-class African Americans, lesbians and heterosexuals.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Remember that scene in Mad Men, where Betty's doctor calls Don & talks to him about Betty as if she were the child? This is how we got away from that.

"Feminism challenged social practices in the doctor's office and recast relationships between compliant patient and infallible physician as part of the larger process to keep women down."

But we must also look at this history and see how we are moving backwards in America;  this is also a dire warning about where we are headed.

"The landmark court case Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973 by finding that preventing a woman's right to end her pregnancy violated her due process, was a pivotal piece of legislation in terms of reproductive rights, women's health and women's ability to make decisions regarding their bodies. "
