In 2015, Mainstream Culture Suddenly Developed an Interest in LGBTQ Seniors

In 2015, Mainstream Culture Suddenly Developed an Interest in LGBTQ Seniors | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Grandma isn’t the only recent film or TV show about LGBTQ characters no longer in the first bloom of youth. Amazon’s Transparent focuses on the ways family members respond to a parent coming out as trans in her 70s. In Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, two septuagenarian law partners come out as life partners, spurring adjustments in the lives of their children and wives of many decades. Vicious, which airs on PBS in the United States, is a gloriously camp celebration of two gay men in their 70s who have been lovers for 50 years. And a trans 66-year-old was at the center of the year’s most talked-about reality show: the E! Network’s I Am Cait. The trend even spread to the book world, where one of the fall’s most lauded nonfiction releases was The Gay Revolution: The Story of the Struggle, by 75-year-old Lillian Faderman. In the arts at least, 2015 was the year of the queer senior.

Why is the culture suddenly so interested in our elders?

On Laverne Cox’s Nude Photo Spread & Meghan Murphy’s Transphobia

On Laverne Cox’s Nude Photo Spread & Meghan Murphy’s Transphobia | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
Laverne Cox graced Allure’s annual “Nudes” issue with a picture that is so honest in its emotion and raw in its beauty I damn near cried looking at it. She admits her insecurities and ultimately decided to shrug them off and have the mac ‘n’ cheese she was craving the night before the shoot. That’s some role model shit right there. Unless you’re Feminist Current founder Meghan Murphy, who says to her neighbors south of the border (she’s Canadian): “What the fuck are you trying to sell us, America?” She mocks Cox’s insecurities and the idea of “radical self-acceptance” by gasping at her ability to indulge in comfort food and still love herself. Murphy telling Cox to put her clothes back on because she’s uncomfortable around the flawlessness that is Cox’s naked form isn’t an expression of her disdain for catering to the “male gaze.” Murphy is scolding a grown woman who made a choice for herself because: “Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about herself might

Study: Gay men earn less than straight men, but lesbians are paid more

Study: Gay men earn less than straight men, but lesbians are paid more | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Sexual orientation seems to affect earning prospects and job satisfaction, a study shows.

Research by Nick Drydakis at Anglia Ruskin University found gay men on average earn 9% less compared to heterosexual men.

However, lesbians on average earn 12% more compared to heterosexual women.

Even in countries in the EU, Australia, Canada and the US, which have the strongest anti-discrimination laws, gay and lesbian people experienced more obstacles in getting a job, earning bias and harassment than their counterparts.

Wicked? Homophobic wizards, gay witches and the fight for acceptance in the Wicca community

Wicked? Homophobic wizards, gay witches and the fight for acceptance in the Wicca community | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Though ‘Wicca’ and ‘paganism’ are often used interchangeably, paganism encompasses a diverse community including Druids, Shamans, Odinists and Heathens.  Wicca itself, has many sub-sections: Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Faery, Pictish and Kitchen Wicca are among the many. Though no single set of beliefs, tests or practices are shared by them all, they can be roughly characterised by: polytheism, the belief in multiple deities; pantheism, the belief that the spiritual and material universes are connected; belief in the afterlife; and an emphasis on ritual. And, like any widespread belief, paganism is not immune to infighting and disagreements.

List of Literary Journals for LGBTQ Writers, Women, and Writers of Color | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

In a previous post, I mentioned my desire to compile a list of journals and presses that exclusively focus on publishing underrepresented voices, such as women, LGBTQ writers, and writers of color. I’ve finally managed to pull something together that hopefully may prove to be a good starting point and resource for those writers who may wish to find a good home for their writing. Or maybe readers who wish to read more widely or diversely.

Why Many Young Chinese Women Are Writing Gay Male Erotica

Why Many Young Chinese Women Are Writing Gay Male Erotica | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

An antipornography campaign in China has netted many young female writers of danmei, erotic fiction focusing on relationships between gay men, a popular outlet for those seeking to escape stifling social identities, scholars say.

...Danmei is part of an ‘‘ongoing sexual revolution’’ with feminist characteristics in China, perhaps the country’s first, said a Chinese academic who requested anonymity. China is currently undergoing a crackdown on pornography that has netted danmei writers and website managers, and closed some sites, sexual rights advocates said. ‘‘The campaign is really having an impact,’’ the researcher said.

Creating and consuming danmei is a way for women to explore their long-repressed sexuality, said Ms. Jacobs.

‘‘I think Chinese culture is still harsh on women in terms of how far they can go in developing a fantasy life or erotic art forms,’’ she said. ‘‘I think they have to be very careful in coming out with their fantasies. The norm is stifling.’’

Anti-Trans Slurs and Drag: Who Exactly Is Transgender, and Does It Matter?

Anti-Trans Slurs and Drag: Who Exactly Is Transgender, and Does It Matter? | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Within the LGBT community's activist sphere, marriage is also becoming increasingly boring, with few debates or arguments arising on the topic. Where the fireworks exist and are expanding is on the issue of gender: gender identity, gender expression, and gender roles. The more fundamental issues of sex and gender are now the locus of debate, and sides are being taken that are exposing increasingly contentious ideological positions.

This arose last week on one of my lists, where it was mentioned that RuPaul was using the slurs "tranny" and "shemale." RuPaul is the drag queen and host of RuPaul's Drag Race, and he identifies as a gay man.

An Idaho Republican can’t think of anyone in his state who has been forced to render aid to a gay or lesbian person against their will, and he’d like to keep it that way.

Rep. Lynn Luker outlined a proposal Tuesday backed by his conservative Christian allies to shield religious people from the threat of losing their professional licenses for refusing service or employment to anyone they conclude violates their religious beliefs.

No, Being Gay Is Not a Choice

No, Being Gay Is Not a Choice | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Last Wednesday, Brandon Ambrosino—continuing his swift ascent as chief homophobia apologist of the gay blogosphere—wrote a vacuous and meandering piece in the New Republic claiming that homosexuality (including his own) is a choice. Predictably, the article launched a thousand think pieces, including E.J. Graff’sexcellent retort in The Nation on Tuesday, arguing that America isn’t yet progressive enough to contemplate homosexuality as a choice.

But it’s really pointless to quibble with Ambrosino’s philosophical points, because science proved his factual assertions wrong long ago. In study after study, biologists have found that homosexuality, at least in men, is clearlyundoubtedlyinarguably aninborn trait. And although the scientific community hasn’t yet settled on a precise explanation for sexual orientation, many biologists agree that the fraternal birth order effect is likely the cause of homosexuality in 15 to 30 percent of all gay men. The physiological mechanism behind this effect, meanwhile, may soon help scientists understand the broader biological basis for homosexuality.
