Placing a tablet or computer on a students desk and expecting them to take off on their own to a planet full of learning excitement is not how technology in the classroom works. In the classroom, the tablet is only a tool when the student uses it as such, and becomes engaged with the content objective ordained by the lesson. In my experience, If my directions and assignment are rudimentary and vague, the student will become bored and stray from the objective. I'd like to share the ideas provided in this article because they are really useful in the classroom. If the assignment involves doing research on the causes of WW2, the students will find a sea of resources online. We ought to guide the student and create a mental guideline they must follow. For instance; David is working on the latter assignment. Now that David found a few sites with reliable information, lets take his learning to a higher level and have him tell you, the teacher, what made him choose one source over the other and how this will help his paper flourish to be informative and accurate.Â

One goal at ISTE13 was to learn more about the hidden world of Google -- the scripts, extensions, and apps. I honestly wasn't aware of them until I read Linda Yollis' post after she went to the Google Teacher Academy... which led me to a post by Amy Mayer atfriEDTechnology, with her video explanation/tutorial: Via Tom D'Amico (@TDOttawa)

by Michael Gorman – I would suggest that educators direct students towards the Google Advanced Search Engine even before using the Google Basic Search. In fact, I would further suggest that an Advanced Search be used until students understand how to use these advanced techniques in a Basic Search. Why? First, I do not see these skills as advanced techniques. I see them as a skill set necessary in finding information in a productive manner.

Nothing hidden about these "tips & tricks" - just standard every day library functions. This is not new, most these functions have been used since Win95, the days before we see the net as we do now. Nonetheless, whatever it takes for people to finally catch up and educate themselves about easier searching techniques!
