It doesn’t just work for a few types of brands, either.

Brands that saw success with the #MakesMeHappy hashtag ranged from Applebees (almost 1,000% bump in retweets) to Orbitz (557% bump in retweets) to the TV show Portlandia (who saw a 200%+ bump in retweets).

In my research, I’ve found a wide opportunity for success across almost every vertical and business model out there.

I’m seeing this same pattern of success not only for daily trending topics, but also big events like the Super Bowl and the Golden Globes. And for planned events like the iPhone Launch announcement and (yes) National Cat Day....

Real-time marketing is currently one of the most prominent trends in digital, however many businesses are still only just starting to experiment with this tactic.


A key question therefore is how fast is ‘real time’?


In Econsultancy’s new Real-Time Marketing Survey Report, published in association with Monetate, more than four-fifths of all respondents (80% company, 82% agency) said that responses should occur in two minutes or less.


At the sharp end, 12% of company respondents said that real time was the ability to respond to consumer behaviours in less than a second. The ability to respond this quickly obviously requires marketing automation software, as human intervention wouldn’t be feasible in such a short timeframe...

I don't think many businesses are ready for real-time marketing yet. and the software to automate in order to respond quickly leaves a lot to be desired.
