Belize: A Leader In Sustainability

Belize: A Leader In Sustainability | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Forbes has a great article highlighting Belize, and its focus on sustainability.  It's highly Cayo centric, as it should be, without mentioning Cayo nor San Ignacio.  It explains how we have the cultural, culinary, and adventure tourism that makes for an unforgettable time.

'Belize is located in Central America, but it has a decidedly Caribbean feel, making it appealing for visitors who want to go snorkeling and diving in some of the most beautiful water in the world...Preserving their environment is not only the right thing to do, but it also makes good economic sense.

For example, to protect endangered species such as the jaguar, Belize is a partner of the Maya Forest Corridor, protecting landscapes from Belize’s Maya Mountains, through the tri-national Maya forest of Belize, Mexico, and Guatemala. This region is the most extensive continuous stretch of jungle in Central America.'

In an attempt to protect its small population of 400,000 while bringing back tourism to safeguard its economy, Belize has put in place some of the most restrictive visitor safety measures in the Caribbean. With a “tourism safe corridor;” “Tourism Gold Standard” certification program for hotels, tour operators, and attractions; and comprehensive Health & Safety guidelines for visitors to follow, the government continues to balance public health during its “Phase 3” reopening."

Belize Tourism Website Impresses

Belize Tourism Website Impresses | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Tourism Board's website was listed on Skift.com's '20 Best Designed Tourism Websites in the World' list.  The site is pretty nice, and worth a quick look.

"TravelBelize.org immediately pulls first-time and repeat site visitors in with an embedded Vimeo video.  This is an advanced technique that few other tourism websites employ.  The website continues to engage visitors with a scrolling homepage that uses large graphics and warm colors to highlight the activities at and tropical culture of the destination."

Arenal Village Website

Arenal Village Website | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Arenal has a website.  The village is planning for tourism, and has a tourism strategy.  They don't mention the football field that is in both Belize and Guatemala, or the wide selection of beers...yet.  Check out the site for more information.

"We could now do this with your help, would love to implement a first step to bring tourism into our village – a soft, natural and authentic way of tourism – built small structures into single citizen’s properties – cabanas with thatched roof or apartments with a concrete roof – rent these accommodations to our visitors, offer full meal plan within the families – eating the ordinary daily food with the hosts, cooked on open wood fire – delicious Central American food – tortillas, fajitas, empanadas, chicken rice & beans, escabeche, salsas, spices and much more and carefully set our village up to a natural tourist place. BTB Reports Record 1Q Tourism

BTB Reports Record 1Q Tourism | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Tourism Board has released their tourism number for the first quarter, and they have broken by far previous records.  The Cayo Tour Guide Association has the entire report on their site.  This is great news for Cayo, as Cruz Cambranes explains:

"If we recall 2012 saw an increase of tourism activity in Belize and most of us did not see a low season, those numbers show a substantial increase 2013.  These records show a 7.58%, 6.0% and a 10.1% increase of tourist arrivals in the months of January, February and March compared to last years arrivals.  If we look at the month of March alone which is spring break rush there was a growth which broke its own record by reaching 28,623.  Well we certainly hope that this continues."

Information about tourism at different destinations can be very interesting for tourism students (and potential tourists).

Tourism Statistic Summary for 2012

Tourism Statistic Summary for 2012 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great news for Belize: according to BTB numbers, overnight tourists are up almost 11%, bringing in quality tourism dollars, and cruise tourists are going down, meaning less deterioration to the reef.  Yes, 2012 was exceptional for tourism, especially overnight tourism, which had an overall 10.7% increase from last year.  In 2012, there were 26,872 more visitors than in 2011: 277,135 visitors for the entire year.  Cayo has obviously been busier in regards to tourism.

"The Belize Tourism Board wishes to extend hearty congratulations to all Belizeans, our partners and stakeholders.  It is through continuous hard work, collaboration and dedication that we are able to achieve such impressive results.  We look forward to an even greater year in 2013!"

Belize’s Winter Wonderland Welcome

Belize’s Winter Wonderland Welcome | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

This is a well written article, and it lists 6 great reasons to come to Belize when it's too cold up north.  From the perfect climate to the diverse people, to Belize being the Mayan heartland, it's in there, but they forgot the Belizean food.  It's going to be a busy tourism season starting next month.

"And the sixth would be the Belizeans themselves, who are often described as the friendliest people on earth.  Multicultural and mostly bilingual, Belizeans are known for their hospitality and welcoming nature.  We’re all very proud of Belize, and want to make sure that visitors have a great time here.”

Tourism Industry Sees Outstanding 2012

Tourism Industry Sees Outstanding 2012 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

It's been a great year for the tourism industry.  There have been more overnight stays and less cruisers, which is great news.  This explains why there have been so many articles about Cayo around the web.  It also accounts for the many new reviews about businesses in Cayo, and why there are more pictures of local ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol permeating the cloud.  Just don't drop the camera on a artifact at ATM.

"Overall, there was a 13.8% increase in overall arrivals through the first half of 2012, which indicates very strong growth despite going into the slow season of the tourism calendar.  In all, Belize’s tourism industry is showing remarkable signs of growth and it continues to set new records during 2012."

The World Travel and Tourism Council has released the tourism statistics for Belize.  There are some interesting numbers in there.  Overall, tourism accounts for around 33% of jobs in Belize, and brought in $1.2 billion, which is 36.6% of the GDP.  Tourism should grow by about 4.5% in 2014.

Belize Economic Update Looking Good

Belize Economic Update Looking Good | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Good news for Belize on the economic front: economic activity, real GDP growth, is forecasted to expand by 2.7% in 2013.  Overnight tourism numbers are expected to go up also, and Cayo will surely benefit immensely from that.

"Economic activity is forecasted to expand by 2.7% in 2013, as the underlying factors that boosted activity in 2012 are expected to moderate.  The projection, which is subject to sizeable downside risks such as commodity price shocks and weather-related setbacks, assumes that the gradual upturn in global growth to 3.5% (Source: IMF World Economic Outlook) continues to support the tertiary sector through the tourism channel.  The primary sector is expected to return to low single digit growth owing largely to a return to normal crop cycles and a forecasted downturn in citrus output.  The secondary sector is expected to eke out a small increase despite headwinds facing the petroleum and domestic electricity generation sub-sectors."
