Why I want to be an Eco Conscious Kid!

Why I want to be an Eco Conscious Kid! | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Julius Gilbert has a good Eco Kid essay.

"As an Eco conscious kid I practice recycling by putting cans in the recycling bin and send it of to get recycled.  When we go to the store and get plastic bags we reuse them for other things like garbage bags, and when we get boxes from the store we reuse them again for garbage.  I am very willing to be an Eco Kid because the environment is the most important thing to me."

Being an Eco Kid

Being an Eco Kid | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

An Eco Kid essay for a Sunday afternoon.

"The first way of the environment is by recycling, planting trees, cleaning up our neighborhood.   When we recycle we will be saving a lot of our marine animals.   Animals like the dolphin, turtles and sharks.  When we throw plastic in the sea these animals eat the plastic and other garbage that floats around in the seas and oceans.   These animals cannot digest plastic or the plastic get stuck in their mouth or throat and the animal dies."

hey kids, air pollution is a really big problem in Belize! Remember all the smoke in San Ignacio just a few weeks ago? Let's get educated about the environmental impact of burning to clear land, the damage caused by uncontrolled burning in terms of loss of wildlife habitat and rare jungle plants, and also address the impact of burning garbage on our health and environment. This generation doesn't have to carry the "torch" of ignorance into the future of Belize! Let's get smart about cleaner air.

What I Think is Important About Recycling and Helping the Earth!

What I Think is Important About Recycling and Helping the Earth! | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Another great Eco Kid essay entry for Chaa Creek's Eco Kid Summer Camp.  This one's from Nia Beane the Recycling Queen.

"I am Nia Beane, I like being Eco-friendly and I am sure I will enjoy going to this camp.  I am very glad when I hear the word 'Eco' or 'Recycle' because those are words of two wonderful ideas.  I have been recycling for quite a while with bottles, containers, and plastic items and dropping them off at the Radisson Recycling Center in Belize City.  Now in my house they call me the 'Recycling Queen.'  I like caring for plants, animals, trees, and things in the jungle because they provide us with lots of things and sometimes animals are in danger.  When you are Eco-friendly you help the world and make it a better place to live and enjoy for people and animals.  It is good when you help the environment because it makes Belize beautiful and helps lots of people."

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Essay

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Essay | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Another Eco Kid essay for the Chaa Creek summer kids camp scholarship, this time from Emily Sanchez, and she talks about the 3 R's.  She sums it up well.

"After having the opportunity to be an Eco Kid, I will be able to share with others the experience that I had at camp.  I will be able to share with others what I learned at camp, the activities that we did, and the adventures that we had. I will also influence them to become aware of their natural surroundings here in Belize and use what I have learned so that they can become an Eco-Kid.  Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle!"

Belizean Recycling at its Finest

T-shirts made from plastic?  Yes!  The concept was demonstrated at the World Travel Expo in London this week.  They collected 18 million plastic bottles, made a fiber that was turned into yarn, and then used that to make the shirts.  Better than burning or discarding.  The Belize Tourism Board really scored big with this one.  Truly an inspiring video, and definitely worth a watch.

"Andrew Wigmore, the managing director of Wigmore Media, talks about a project in Belize where they convert plastic bottles into make T-Shirts. He explains how it's done, the cost and its impact on the environment"

I Want to Learn about Nature and Animals

I Want to Learn about Nature and Animals | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Biana Gray has a good Eco Kid essay.

"I want to have fun and make new friends.  I want to learn more about nature and animals.  I also want to learn about recycling, reusing, and reducing.  My dogs are recycled dogs.  They are all abandoned dogs that we found on the street.  I reuse plastic bottles as water bottles for school.  I reduce the time I spend on the computer.  I want to learn about organic gardening, so me and my family can eat healthy.  The most important thing about being an eco kid is learning and having fun at the same time."

Chaa Creek's Eco Kids Summer Camp

There's still time to submit essays for Chaa Creek's Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program.  They have a short video out about the program.

"Every year we team up with a number of private sector businesses to offer a weeklong summer camp scholarship program for Belize's resident school children between the ages of 8 to 13 years old in order to educate them about biodiversity, natural resource conservation, the ancient Maya, traditional healing, and the three "R's" Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  The program aims to install memorable values that will have an impact on the way children conduct their lives, their relationship with our fragile Earth, and the sustainable development of our future."

In related news, they have another submission for the essay competition.

FCD Youth Group's Eco-Bins | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Friends for Conservation and Development Environmental Youth Group has found a way to use old plastic bottles to make a durable bin.  Quite amazing.  They've released pictures of the process.  Sell those around Cayo.
