Eco Kids Learn About Land Conservation

Eco Kids Learn About Land Conservation | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Eco Kids had fun at Chaa Creek's Maya Organic Farm.

"From pitaya harvesting to learning how to grow okro, campers got down and dirty while learning about some of the more interesting farming techniques.  There were also a couple opportunities to sample herbs such as lemongrass, mint and basil.  Some campers even decided to try nibbling on the cayenne peppers hanging from a nearby bush, but quickly reconsidered once their mouths started burning!"

8 Green Ways to Experience Belize

8 Green Ways to Experience Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo has four of the sites in this almost a top 10 list.  Actun Tunichil Muknal tops the list, of course.  Xunantunich is next on the list, followed by the Maya Organic Farm at Chaa Creek.  Ending the list is a jungle tour.  While there are many others, these are 8 great ways to start.

"With the rise in the popularity of ecotourism, Belize has positioned itself as a leader in the field, with the government protecting 40% of the land for conservation purposes.  It’s hard to find a hotel, lodge, or service that is not eco-friendly in Belize.  Though it may be impossible to know how much the locals focus on 'being green' in their daily life, connecting with indigenous Maya people through education programs or learning about sustainability efforts from guides indicates a commitment to protecting their land, even as tourism grows."

Eco Kids Learn about Sustainability

Eco Kids Learn about Sustainability | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Eco Kids have gotten presetations on Sustainability and Solid Waste Management while having a great time at their Summer camp.

"After finishing touches were put on the bracelets, campers lined up and marched to the Chaa Creek conference room, where Mr. Brion Young gave a presentation on the various ways to use environmentally friendly practices in everyday life.  Mr. Young highlighted several of the ways in which Chaa Creek recycles, such as using old cardboard boxes as mulch at the Maya Organic Farm, as well as giving campers advice on recycling at home."

Eco Kids Tour Maya Organic Farm

Eco Kids Tour Maya Organic Farm | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Eco Kids got to tour Chaa Creek's Maya Organic Farm with the owner, Mick Fleming.

"The eco-campers had a chance to tour the operation and recognize many local plants, trees, herbs, and produce.  They were also treated to some live action as we met the sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, heifers, and even the bull.  To top off the farm adventure, the kids had a chance to stick their entire arms into the compost piles, as Mr. Mick explained to them how everything in an organic farm is connected, right down to the animals’ feces!  No wonder they all washed their hands so well before lunch.  An afternoon filled with swimming, canoeing, and lots of fun in the sun has left this blogger’s brain on empty so we will let the pictures tell the rest of the tale."
