Cayo a Top Central American Destination

Cayo a Top Central American Destination | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Congratulations are in order.  Cayo was listed on Trip Advisor's top 10 Central American destinations, based upon travelers' experiences in the region.  As it should be, since we have so much to do, including Cahal Pech, seen in the picture.  Cayo came in at 7th place.  San Pedro, the only other Belize entry, came in 1st place.

"It’s true: parts of Belize are getting touristy. But San Ignacio remains rustic, making it a great base for budget-friendly tropical adventure travel. Canoe on the Macal River, or walk to Mayan ruins at Cahal Pech (just be warned: it's uphill)."

Ambergris Named Best Island in the World

Ambergris Named Best Island in the World | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Ambergris Caye won Trip Advisor's Travelers' Choice Award for Best Island in the World...again!  This is the second year in a row that they've won.  Belize - Cayo too, of course - in general gets higher reviews from travellers that use Trip Advisor.  Congratulations, Ambergris!  Be sure and let your guests know that the jungle awaits them.

"For the second year in a row, Ambergris Caye takes top honors.  The beautiful Belize island offers the perfect blend of modern development and laid-back tranquility.  A mangrove swamp is the eye of this white beach island, the largest in Belize, and golf carts are the main form of transportation along the sandy roads.  Reef divers drool over the Belize Barrier Reef and the Blue Hole, a 400-feet deep circle of limestone that teems with angelfish, elkhorn coral, cleaner shrimp and stalactites."

"Hanna Stables is amongst the oldest horseback riding establishments in Belize, and it is part of a larger network that includes Nabitunich accommodations and the 400 acre San Lorenzo Farms.  All of the properties have been in the Juan family for four generations. Santiago Juan is currently the head operator of the properties.  We are happy to provide all guests to Belize with ample horseback riding tours  of nearby Mayan ruins at Hanna Stables as well as comfortable overnight accommodations at Nabitunich cottages and educational opportunities at San Lorenzo Farms."

Gaia Riverlodge Goes Fully Hydro

Gaia Riverlodge Goes Fully Hydro | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Gaia Riverlodge now gets all their electricity from hydropower.  They changed the name from Five Sisters - they get the energy from the Five Sisters falls - and renovated the entire lodge only one year ago.  They have a good reputation since the changeover, and get great reviews on Trip Advisor.  Definitely proving they are a true eco-lodge.

"Using the nearby Five Sisters waterfalls as their energy source, the GAÏA Riverlodge is now run entirely by hydropower energy, eliminating the need for electricity.  But don't worry, the hotel does have a back-up system, an eco-friendly one too that's battery-powered.  The GAÏA Riverlodge is also cultivating an on-site vegetable garden which will bring fresh, or 'hyper-local' as they call it, produce to the lodge's restaurants. Awesome."

"The ride to Xunantunich is pleasant and scenic, including the crossing of the Mopan river by a hand-churned ferry.  Just a little further on are the well known Mayan ruins of Xunantunich.  Also, if it’s a lucky day, you will be able to experience an up close encounter with howler monkeys.

The Xunantunich ride has a duration 1 ½ hours of riding to the site and approximately 2 hours hiking of the site, and an additional 2 hours ride back.  This is a half day to a full day ride depending on the request of the guest.  Lunch stops can be included to a feast of local dishes in a pristine setting along the river. Please indicate in the booking form if you would like lunch included."

Chaa Creek Wins on TA and Oyster

Chaa Creek Wins on TA and Oyster | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Chaa Creek not only won a Trip Advisor Travelers' Choice awards, but made the Oyster.com list for 15 Unique Hotel Stays.  On TA, they won in the Best Small Hotels category, and they remain on the Best Family Hotels category from last year.  Read what Oyster.com has to say about them.  Congratulations, Chaa Creek!

"Chaa Creek, one of Belize's first eco-lodges, has evolved from its humble beginnings as a working farm to become a premier luxury retreat.  This sophisticated operation includes rustic-luxe, thatched-roof cottages, wonderful service, and modern amenities such as an infinity pool with jungle views and a full-service spa.  The riverside setting on a private rainforest reserve is phenomenal, and myriad tours and outdoor activities are offered through the hotel.  To top it off, room rates are fair for what you get -- and there are even budget accommodations available at Macal River Camp (pictured), located on the property."

Congratulations to Twin Palms Bed and Breakfast, for not just being ranked number 1 in Cayo, but also for having 127 perfect reviews, and winning the Trip Advisor Travelers' Choice award for Best B&B.

"I was in Belmopan for a few nights for business and Anna and team at Twin Palms made my stay effortless, incredibly comfortable and stress free.  I was upgraded to one of the separate suites that had a kitchenette, it's own wifi and a beautiful spacious bedroom.  Any concern or issue I had was quickly addressed by Anna.  I was even provided with a cell while staying there so I could call a taxi service to take me to and from my meetings.  When I needed to print off documents or order food from the local restaurant Anna was there to help.  Even the cleaning staff that tended to my room daily were lovely.  I can honestly not recommend this bed & breakfast enough.  If I ever return to Belmopan I will definitely be staying at Twin Palms.  Thank you so much Anna and Tim for your amazing hospitality"

Australian Argues Ambergris

Australian Argues Ambergris | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Funny of the day.  'An Aussie Strikes Back,' very comically, at Ambergris being named the best island in the world by Trip Advisor.  Classic!

"Hang on, hang on – as a loyal reader of the Chaa Creek Belize Travel Blog, I just read your recent post about Ambergris Caye being voted by this mob calling themselves Trip Advisor as the best island in the world. Fair enough, the place is lovely. Stunning in fact.  In the post they do rabbit on about the Belize Great Barrier Reef, and as a fair dinkum Aussie you’ll forgive me for being partial to our own Great Barrier Reef, but to each their own, live and let live, I say.  And, to be honest, both reefs are pretty similar, ours just being a tad bigger.  But then, not a few clicks later I come across an online Travel Weekly article, “Australia snubbed in islands awards” and you could have knocked me over with a feather."

Best Places to Visit in Belize

Best Places to Visit in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

While Belize has been on many lists lately, from Trip Advisor, to Lonely Planet, to Fodor's, this week, a couple of great articles about Belize were published.  The first, entitled Five Reasons to Love Belize, discusses the mysteriousness of Caves Branch and the wildlife at the Belize Zoo, and its Tropical Education Center.  http://www.wheretostay.com/blog/Five-Reasons-To-Love-Belize/277

The second, entitled Top Best Places to Visit in Belize, deserves the blatant redundancy in its title because Cayo is listed first.  Cayo's Larry Waight wrote the piece for the Huffington Post, and he gave a long list of prime destinations.

"San Ignacio Town is the main town in the Cayo District of western Belize and is an ideal base to explore ancient Maya cities like Caracol and Xunantunich, ceremonial caves like Barton Creek and Actun Tunichil Muknal, and cascading water falls like Rio on Pools and Big Rock waterfalls in the Mountain Pine Ridge Nature Reserve.  Hiking, kayaking, bird watching and horseback riding are also top rated outdoor activities in the area."

Green Iguana Conservation Project Video

The Ambergris Today paid a visit to Cayo to experience some of the best restaurants and attractions in Belize, and they made sure to stop by the Green Iguana Conservation Project at the SIRH, which is ranked as the number one attraction in Cayo on Trip Advisor, and for good reason.  The video they did on their visit is spectacular, and really captures the essence of the tour.  Iguanas, termites, orchids, grasshoppers, and lots of other flora and wildlife, even Humbero Requena.  Definitely worth a watch.

"Belize is home to thousands of species of trees, flowers and hundreds of species of animals.  An amazing array of creatures makes their homes in our Belize.  Get a glimpse of this vast wildlife at two of San Ignacio Resort Hotel tours - the Medicinal Trail and the Belize Iguana Project. "
