"New tourism facilities at the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve were completed under the Sustainable Tourism Program (STP) II, which is a five-year program financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and executed through the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations.

The project includes facilities at two areas within the reserve: (1) the Rio On Pools enhancement consists of a visitors’ pavilion, a panoramic viewing area, two public restrooms, and changing rooms; (2) the Rio Frio Cave enhancement consists of three picnic palapas, restroom, and new access trails. Both facilities will now have eco-friendly sewage systems, and the supply of water will be powered by solar energy.

The facilities were handed over on Friday, March 26, 2021 by Hon. Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, to Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management. The Forestry Department will now be responsible to maintain the facilities, as the managing entity in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve."

Cayo Archaeological Sites Upgrading

Cayo Archaeological Sites Upgrading | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, and ATM will all be getting upgrades this year.

"Under the Sustainable Tourism Program (STP), funds totaling Bz$504,596.74 will be spent on expanded bathroom and interpretation facilities at Cahal Pech and Belize’s second most visited site, Xunantunich.  A new visitor centre will be built at Xunantunich to present and communicate its history, architecture and Maya cosmology.  The existing visitor centre at Cahal Pech will undergo a revamp, and improvements will be made to the site trail.  The enhancements are timely, as Cahal Pech is the chosen venue for a number of the special events planned to celebrate the completion of the 13th B'ak'tun in December.  Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) will benefit from Bz$177,500 investment.  It is an exclusive tour, as ATM is one of the most spectacular subterranean Maya archaeological sites in the region.  By December, visitors will enjoy complete restroom and bathing facilities, set in a landscaped jungle environment at the entrance to the site."

ATM Sustainable Tourism Project

Better facilities are being built at the Actun Tunichil Muknal site.

"Under the Sustainable Tourism Project (STP), several Archaeology Reserves will be receiving funding for various infrastructure projects.  ATM is the most documented site in the country, and one of the most superior subterranean sites in the region.  Tour operators/numbers are controlled by license with 95% of all tours to the site originating in San Ignacio Town.  Current facilities are almost non-existent, therefore investments will be made to: 1. Design and construct modern bathroom, changing and restroom facilities to cater to an increase in current visitation; and 2. Construction of a ticket/security booth onsite in conjunction with landscaping of the site entrance and car park area."
