Learn What Lies Beyond the Beaches of Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Men's Journal interviews Anthony Mahler, the Minister of Tourism, and they ask some good questions that get answered with Belize's sustainability in mind.  Actun Tunichil Muknal is recommended to readers.

'

Having a sustainable tourism master plan is at the core of what I do. I aim to balance development and innovation while preserving the natural and cultural resources. About 40 percent of our entire territory of Belize is under protected status.'

BTIA Cayo Hold First Clean-Up Campaign

BTIA Cayo Hold First Clean-Up Campaign | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Cayo BTIA, supporting their cause of sustainable tourism, held their first clean-up campaign last weekend, and, wow, they picked up a lot of trash between Cayo and Benque.  Thanks to all the people that made this happen, including Chaa Creek, Black Rock Lodge, and Ka'ana!

"A typical conversation with a Belizean about what they think makes Belize so great will eventually lead to the point being made that it’s Mother Nature’s best-kept secret and a haven for sustainable tourism. Further investigate why and you’ll hear about the historic Mayan Ruins, the miles of untouched jungle, the birds, the great barrier reef and practically every other highlight there is to know about Belize. In addition to all the talk of natural resources, we’re sure you’ve heard us speak of the commitment from Belizeans to be as green as can possibly be...

The hope for this project? That next time more teams join – enough teams to clean up the entire 8 mile stretch of road between San Ignacio & Benque Viejo Town. The longer-term goal? To remind everyone in Belize that together we can make a valuable difference and notable contribution!"

Responsible Tourism and Sustainability

Responsible Tourism and Sustainability | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Eco Kids camp is almost finished.  The kids learned about sutainable practices and responsible tourism from Lucy Fleming and Jacqueline Britt.

"With only two full days of camp remaining, our theme today emphasized Chaa Creek’s goals, actions, and vision for the future – responsible tourism and sustainability.  Before heading to the conference center for a presentation from Chaa Creek Owner and Founder, Lucy Fleming, our Eco Camp Director, Jacqueline Britt, gave the campers a talk about Mennonite sustainable living...  Today’s other main activity was a visit to our unofficial classroom up at the resort to learn more about how we can be more responsible in our tourism practices.  Lucy explained to us that tourism already accounts for 25% of Belize’s Gross Domestic Product and directly employs one quarter of the population. As the fastest growing industry in Belize, we have an obligation to ensure that we are practicing the most eco-friendly techniques and mentality in this field."

Hidden Valley Inn Noted for Sustainability

Hidden Valley Inn Noted for Sustainability | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Hidden Valley Inn won Sustainable Trip's Making a Difference award for April.  Not only is HVI impressive for its 7200 acres of upland savanah and tropical broadleaf forest with private waterfalls and 90 miles of trails, but for their efforts towards sustainable tourism.  Congratulations!

"Sustainability is the mainstay of our tourism products, hotel, and tours.  We believe that protecting the natural environment and its diverse ecosystems will be a great benefit to the tourism industry of Belize for generations to come.  We use eco-friendly chemicals and products from reputable suppliers as well as fresh local produce instead of imported packaged goods.  We monitor our electricity, fuel, and water usage and have an eco-friendly garbage disposal system.  We rely on locals for our business and employ the majority of our employees from the surrounding villages.  By economically empowering these residents, they in turn take ownership of the natural resources and are motivated to protect the wildlife and biodiversity of the area."

UNBELIZEABLUE Production Trailer

Video of the month. Check out the trailer for UnBelizeablue.  Wow! Conservation is definitely what Belize should focus on, especially with the demand for sustainable, cultural, and natural tourism.  Full of facts, like 90% of the marine conservation leaders in Belize are women.  Awesome! It is marine focused, but it affects all of us.  Definitely worth a watch.

"The first production trailer for UNBELIZEABLUE, a new documentary that follows a multigenerational group of inspiring women leaders striving to protect the world's second largest coral reef system. To learn more, visit http://www.unbelizeablue.org"

Belize Wildlife Benefactor's Tour

Belize Wildlife Benefactor's Tour | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic has an excellent idea for sustainable conservation projects.  People can take a learning vacation that helps the local community.  They'll be doing their first one in January.

"How to find sustainable income sources for small wildlife conservation projects in developping countries?  We have been working and pondering for a few years...and we are exited to share that in January 2014 we will try something new: An 8 day high-end tour to experience and support amazing wildlife conservation efforts while enjoying the best of Belize. Not for credit, but for wildlife lovers and conservation minded individuals with the desire to travel with a purpose.  For those interested in an adventure, with 'creature comforts,' while contributing to wildlife conservation in Belize.  Please share this message and the flyer with your friends and family or others who might be interested in learning more about this?"

Howler Monkeys at the CBS

Howler Monkeys at the CBS | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

This is a great review of the Community Baboon Sanctuary.  It gives a good overview, and tells the CBS' history.  It's to the howler monkeys what the Iguana Hatchery is to iguanas.

"This organization started in 1985 with the idea that local landowners in villages where black howler monkeys live could voluntarily pledge to conserve and practice sustainable land management practices.  27 years later, the organization is still going strong, and is led by a group of women called the Women’s Conservation Group.  Over 200 people in 7 small communities across 20 square miles have pledged to conserve their land for the black howler monkey.  The Women’s Conservation Group has representatives from each community.  These women attend monthly meetings and bring news back to their communities to share in the conservation effort.  They are also in charge of tourism at the sanctuary, educational efforts, managing the museum, lodging, tours, and the list goes on and on."

Xunantunich Getting New Ferry

Xunantunich is getting a new ferry!  The classic hand cranked ferry, that's been in 1000's of pictures and videos, is being retired after 3 decades.

"The new ferry will retain much of the characteristics of the iconic hand-cranked ferry which has faithfully served tourists and local visitors for over 3 decades. The ferry currently transports around 50, 000 visitors a year and up to 300 visitors a day on peak days, with the assistance of the strong arms of the Institute of Archaeology ferry captains! Funded through the Sustainable Tourism Program (STP) the new ferry will have a larger capacity to assist visitor flow, incorporate improved safety measures and include motorized assistance to the traditional hand-crank operations."

Joe Awe presents on Responsible Tourism

Joe Awe presents on Responsible Tourism | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

If you know Joe Awe, then you know he's a visionary leader.  With him at the helm of the Cayo Tour Guide Association, great changes are on their way.

"Last night I had the distinct pleasure of attending a lecture by Mr. Joe Awe, President of the Cayo Tour Guide Association, Senior Guide at The Lodge at Chaa Creek, and lecturer at the local Junior College. The presentation was on Sustainable Development in Belize for a group of students from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.

Joe’s in-depth knowledge about the Belizean economy and specifically the tourism industry was enlightening. He passionately delivered a compelling argument for Responsible Tourism and the need to develop a more concrete sustainable vision (at the policy level) for the tourism industry of Belize."
