Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed

The Science Museum of Mineesota's exhibit on the Maya appropriately opened yesterday on the Summer Solstice.  They have a great video talking about the exhibit, and they feature Xunantunich and Caracol on it.  The exhibit features artifacts from Cahal Pech too.

"The Maya created one of the great civilizations of the ancient world.  Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed, opening June 21, 2013 at the Science Museum of Minnesota, explores ancient Maya society through the eyes of powerful kings and queens and the farmers, artisans, administrators, and craftsmen who supported the elite and made up the foundations of these ancient states.  The exhibition will feature artifacts from throughout the Maya world, interactive exhibits and evocative environments to make the lives of the Maya relevant, accessible, and approachable."

I believe the two major draws of the Mesoamerican civilizations is that one they achieved such amazing things without the wheel and that even today a significant portion of their footprint is yet to be discovered; still hidden from us in the rain forest.

Celebrating the Maya Solstice

Celebrating the Maya Solstice | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Happy Summer Solstice to all!  Hope the group camping at Caracol is having a great time.  The longest day of the year has come and gone.

"The Maya were known to have used various shadows and designs-formed by their massive pyramids-to signal key times on their calendar and predict the best dates for marriages, burials and other milestones.  During the solstice, you will witness the sun’s direct alignment with the center of the Maya Observatory at Caracol."

Caracol's Summer Camping

Caracol's Summer Camping | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Caracol camping trips that NICH is doing this year are mentioned on the New York Times. 'Mayan Sleepovers' are how they described them, and the Summer sleepover is next Wednesday night, the 20th of June. Email them for more information at iaresearch57@gmail.com.

"...the sleepovers take place on solstice and equinox dates — June 20, Sept. 21 and Dec. 20 — at the site, in the country’s Cayo district. The stay begins with a pre-sunset tour led by Dr. Jaime Awe, who directed the excavation and restoration of Caracol in the 1980s... In the middle of the night, shamans wake campers with drumbeats, calling them to a Mayan fire ceremony, which lasts until dawn."

Equinox Tour of Belize’s Caracol Mayan Ruins

Well written article about the overnight in Caracol.  The next one is on the Summer Solstice.  Contact NICH at iaresearch57@gmail.com for more details.  As always, there are great words describing Dr. Jaime Awe.

"Although clearly a scholar, Dr. Awe has an appealing personality and an infectious sense of humor.  He was not at all the serious, elderly professor of archaeology I had expected.  He is quite youthful in appearance, although he must be in his mid to late 50s, given his years of study and field work.  He is an engaging speaker and tour guide.  It was a delight to accompany him on his journey into an long past era at the Caracol site..

Caracol for the Summer Solstice

Caracol for the Summer Solstice | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article about camping overnight at Caracol for the Summer Solstice.  The National Institute for Culture and History did a wonderful job.  Dr. Jaime Awe is given praise for his great presentations.

"I felt like I stepped back in time, when we made our way back to the camp grounds after dark.  Torches lit the entire plaza and pathways that led down to the kitchen, outdoor showers and outhouses.  I suppose I felt closer to how the Maya felt- with the sounds of the jungle, the smell of the smoke, and the hazy view the smoke leaves behind – as the only obstacles to being one with nature.  There was no loud music blaring, car horns tooting, or sirens going off.  We enjoyed the most delicious Maya dinner I have ever had.  It felt like a huge celebration feast for the summer solstice."
