Carmelita Lara, the new Queen of the West, will be heading to the Queen of the Bay soon.  The Queen of the West pageant was held at the Octavia Waight Center.  They have posted a lot of pictures from the event: evening gowns, talent displays, swimsuits, and even the judges.  1st runner up was Shantel Augustine, and 2nd runner up was Hamira Awe.

All the Queen of the Bay contestants met with the Prime Minister in a question and answer session.

Happy New Year!  Here's a good news message from Prime Minister Dean Barrow.  Have a great New Year's Eve!

"The picture is even more satisfying when broken down into a sector by sector analysis. The mainstays of our economy, agriculture and tourism, did especially well; and their trajectory into 2013 appears even more robust."

25 Honoured at Tribute to Belizean Patriots

25 Honoured at Tribute to Belizean Patriots | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Congratulations to all the Belizean patriots!

"This year, 20 individuals received Meritorious Service Awards; four received Orders of Distinction and Justice Manuel Sosa was honoured with the Order of Belize.  The Tribute to Belizean Patriots is an event that is specially highlighted on Prime Minister Barrow’s September Celebrations calendar.  He said that is because 'this is when we fully honour selected Belizean citizens for patriotic services to Belize and Belizeans.'  Unfortunately, Prime Minister Barrow could not attend the ceremony because he had to leave the country to assist his wife as she completes her cancer treatment.  The Governor General of Belize, Sir Colville Young, handed out the awards himself."

Honoring National Heroes

Honoring National Heroes | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The PM has announced that to honor Belize's national heroes, the Western Highway will be renamed George Price Highway.  The Northern Highway will be renamed Philip Goldson Highway.  Great idea!  Happy Independence Day!

"HONORING OUR NATIONAL HEROES: The Rt. Hon. the Prime Minister Mr. Dean has just announced the renaming of the Western and Northern Highways.  The Western Highway is now the George Price Highway.  The Northern Highway is not the Phillip Goldson Highway Way to go our National Heroes."

The Caribbean Journal has a good article about the election.

"The voting “went smoothly in most areas,” Tamai said, with a turnout of approximately 73.11 percent, according to official results."

FCD Presented on Chiquibul to PM

FCD Presented on Chiquibul to PM | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Rafael Manzanero, Executive Director of Friends for Conservation and Development, and the FCD crew, gave a presentation on the Chiquibul Forest Reserve to the PM last week.  The Chiquibul is one of Belize's greatest areas for flora and fauna diversity, and a large part of the country's water supply originates there, over 4 billion gallons a year.  Save the Chiquibul!

"FCD had the opportunity to present their work to the Prime Minister, Dean Barrow on the 11th of September regarding the protection of the Chiquibul Forest.  FCD’s Director explained the challenges faced to secure the protected area.  The reunion was extremely productive and encouraging and the Prime Minister recognized the important work carried out by FCD."

The Fighter: Kim Simplis-Barrow

The Fighter: Kim Simplis-Barrow | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Kim Simplis-Barrow is featured in this month's issue of American Airlines' American Way magazine.  Her essay, 'Fighter's Tale,' is included.  The way that the editor, Adam Pitluk, wrote about his friend is well done and touching.

"Kim Simplis Barrow is my friend.  She’s your friend, too, even though you’ve probably never met her.  She’s a friend to the ideals of smart growth and fair housing; to education and the pursuit thereof; to all living creatures; to humanity.  Throughout her life, she’s been committed not only to her native land, but also to the global community.  Her philanthropic commitments have taken her around the world.  She’s met kings and queens, presidents and premiers, noblemen and dignitaries.  And they’ve met her.  As the first lady of Belize, Kim Simplis Barrow and her husband, prime minister Dean Barrow, have represented their Central American country from continent to continent. Kim Simplis Barrow is my friend, and friends stick together.  That’s why I thought this column would be the perfect forum for telling her story to American Airlines’ passengers.  Especially now, in October, which is, as you hopefully gleaned from the pink ribbon on the cover of this issue, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  And my friend has stage-three breast cancer."

Looks like they had a great team for the Inspiration Telethon.  A lot of people lent a hand, including Prime Minister Dean Barrow and several members of his Cabinet, and some Belize Cancer Society members.

While we're all having fun watching Prince Harry tour Belize, let's not forget that it's Women's month, and politics aside, the courage and strength of Mrs. Kim Simplis-Barrow.  Read the article on ComplexD.  http://www.complexd.co.uk/2012/02/magazine/women-of-strength-issue-09/

"The First Lady of Belize, Kim Simplis-Barrow was sadly diagnosed with stage three Breast Cancer on November 7, 2011; she became the first public figure in Belize to go public with her illness in such a fashion. And her brave embrace to this dreaded disease has placed Mrs. Barrow on the cover story of the British digital magazine, ComplexD.

It’s the magazine’s feature on “Women of Strength Issue” and in Mrs. Barrow’s cover story the article states: “Her courage and honesty in dealing with her diagnosis is truly honorable and epitomizes the definition of a woman of strength.”"
