Belize Listed on Top 10 Greenest Places on Earth

Belize Listed on Top 10 Greenest Places on Earth | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize was mentioned on Travel & Leisure's Top 10 Greenest Places on Earth list.  They specifically mentioned the Maya Mountains.

"The Maya Mountains stretch 70 miles across southern Belize into Guatemala. This range is a stark change from the bright blues of Belize's coastline. Here in the Maya Mountains, thick jungles brim with unique adventures, from spotting wildlife like jaguars and tapirs to swimming beneath waterfalls or summiting Victoria Peak, the country's second-highest mountain. To fully embrace the country's mesmerizing green landscapes, book a room at the eco-chic Copal Tree Lodge, where nature is the main attraction. The property is tucked into 22,000 acres of lush jungle, with in-room bathtubs and showers that offer treetop (and howler monkey) views, not to mention a funicular to take you down to explore the Rio Grande.

Chiquibul: Paradise of Unparalleled Beauty

Chiquibul: Paradise of Unparalleled Beauty | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Pictures of the day.  Chiquibul is all its glory.  Thanks, Roni Martinez!

"Tucked silently in the Maya Mountains of south-central Belize, a massive forest lies between an area of the most pristine beauty and the most ravaged landscape left behind by development.  This is the Chiquibul forest, a bit over 7% of Belize and standing as the nation's largest protected area at 264,000 acres.  The biodiversity within, is beyond amazing... the beauty, indescribable.  The financial benefits ascribed to it amount in the billions, yet it is not under full protection.  But why?  If it provides Belize with clean water, clean air, timber, gold and a myriad of other benefits, why not protect it?  The raw truth... wildlife can't speak and the trees can't vote!  Therefore they do not exist to the government?"

I am a Nature Lover

I am a Nature Lover | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Maslin Hanson wrote a great Eco Kid essay for Chaa Creek's Eco Kid Summer Camp essay competition.  She starts it off strong.

"I believe that since I am a nature lover, I would make an excellent Eco Kid 2013.  As young citizens of this beautiful jewel we call home, there is a lot that it offers to us.  We have the prestigious barrier reef and atolls, the magnificent Maya mountain and rain forest and numerous ancient monuments, too many to mention.  As compared to other Central American countries we are blessed with a lot of wondrous beauty. Now, as very proud citizens of this jewel we need to encourage everyone to protect and take care of our natural heritage.  There is no need for us to waste and destroy what we have.  Instead we should be focus in building and preserving what we are blessed with.  We have the rich tropical rain forest filled with unique flora and fauna.  We should not allow anyone to cut our trees but encourage them to cut and plant trees back trees which would replace the ones they cut."
