MPR New Tourism Facilities

MPR New Tourism Facilities | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Rio On Pools and Rio Frio Cave have beautiful new facilities for everyone to enjoy, and they were inaugurated last week by the Ministry of Tourism.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CNP_ngHFZuc/

"New tourism facilities at the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve were completed under the Sustainable Tourism Program (STP) II, which is a five-year program financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and executed through the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations.

The project includes facilities at two areas within the reserve: (1) the Rio On Pools enhancement consists of a visitors’ pavilion, a panoramic viewing area, two public restrooms, and changing rooms; (2) the Rio Frio Cave enhancement consists of three picnic palapas, restroom, and new access trails. Both facilities will now have eco-friendly sewage systems, and the supply of water will be powered by solar energy.

The facilities were handed over on Friday, March 26, 2021 by Hon. Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, to Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management. The Forestry Department will now be responsible to maintain the facilities, as the managing entity in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve."

Finding Culture & Adventure Fit for a Teen

Finding Culture & Adventure Fit for a Teen | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Sunday read.  Great article highlighting a few of the many local cultural attractions that are great experiences for teenagers.  Well written, and Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, and the sites in MPR(Rio Frio Cave is pictured above), are all in there.  They loved their stay at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel, and enjoyed the Green Iguana Conservation Project.

"Our week in San Ignacio barely scratched the surface of the outdoor and cultural excursions offered here..

We wanted to make sure we learned as much as we could about our hometown for the week, so we dedicated a full morning to San Ignacio itself. We toured through the fruit and vegetable market (busiest on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) and also really enjoyed learning about the history and process of cacao and drinking chocolate in the Mayan tradition at AJAW Chocolate and Crafts. Additional tours offer cooking classes and lessons on corn processing and tortilla-making at a Mayan women’s co-op...

Xunantunich and Cahal Pech: both these archaeological sites are rich in historical and cultural significance, and both are within easy distance of San Ignacio. Our leader, San Ignacio Resort Hotel guide Cruz, shuttled us only 25 minutes to arrive at Xunantunich, where we walked in the footsteps of Mayan people who civilized this region long before Columbus made his mark (or Christ, for that matter)."

CC+L Explores MPR

CC+L Explores MPR | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Caribbean Culture and Lifestyle team took a trip to Mountain Pine Ridge.  They loved Big Rock Falls and Rio On Pools, and stayed at Hidden Valley Inn, where they captured a magical scene at Butterfly Falls.  They made a short video of the 1000 Foot Falls with some of their drone footage..

"Of the 8,867 square miles that make up Belize, 28% of the country is environmentally protected. The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, located in the Cayo district, is the oldest and largest protected reserve in the country. Lush green pine and broadleaf forest, beautiful rivers and hidden waterfalls that speckle the area make for a nature lovers paradise.

Abundant in wildlife, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is home to wild cats and magnificent birds such as the Blue-Crowned Motmot, Keel- Billed Toucan, Common Crossbill, King Vulture and the Warbler.

Whether it be trekking through the forest, bird watching, or having a romantic day at the waterfalls, the Mountain Pine Ridge offers an unparalleled experience."

Exploring the Ruins of Caracol

Video of the day.  Some visitors to Belize captured their day at the Maya archaeological site of Caracol, and some of the sights in MPR, like Big Rock Falls and Rio On Pools.  They had fun, and wrote a good article about the experience..

"Monkeys howled in the distance, and we spotted a flock of at least 20 keel-billed toucans (the national bird of Belize) settle in a tree overlooking the ruins. But our favorite critters of the day were the small, crawling, sort.  Angel tasted termites straight from the nest (they taste like dirt), and we watched as George picked up a large leaf-cutter ant.  It’s pinchers wiggled constantly, and when George held it against a leaf, it held on tight."

MPR Earth Day Cleanup | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

A huge thanks to everyone that helped with the Mountain Pine Ridge cleanup in honor of Earth Day.  Looks like they collected tons of trash. Go Green...and don't freaking litter!

"Happy Earth Day Everyone!!  Mariposa Jungle Lodge proudly joins our industry partners in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve as 3 of our team members of the Go Green team embarked on a rigorous clean up campaign this morning.  Our designated portion is from the Seven Miles Junction to the Junction of Hidden Valley Inn.  Together we can raise more awareness and make a daily difference."

MET, Cayo, and Caulker from Above

Stunning!  Incredible!  The best aerial footage done in Belize so far, and it all starts out, and ends, in Cayo, at Mountain Equestrian Trails.  So beautiful, you'll be amazed.  Big Rock Falls, San Antonio, Barton Creek Cave, and MPR are all seen in HD.  Thanks, MET, for sponsoring this!

"A big thanks to Mountain Equestrian Trails for accommodation and providing so much adventure.

FCD Chiquibul Vistor Center | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Friends for Conservation and Development inaugurated the new Chiquibul Visitor Center last week.  It looks like a very welcoming and informational visitor center, and PACT was there to get some pictures of it.  Be sure and visit it when you are in MPR.

"Funded through the GEF/UNDP funded SNC.PAs project being implemented by the National Protected Areas Secretariat (NPAS). It is also complementary to PACT’s ongoing investments in the Chiquibul National Park.  Acknowledging NPAS for the beautiful pictures"

Maya Mountain Adventure Challenge Collage

Video of the day.  One of the photographers for the MMAC put together 100's of pictures from the race last month.  He captured pictures from all over Cayo, from downtown San Ignacio to Cahal Pech, to waterfalls and trails in MPR.  He captures the essence of the race really well, and he has the music to go with it - 'We Are the Champions' is one of many great songs.

A Magical World at MPR

A Magical World at MPR | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Mountain Pine Ridge might be the second focus of this article about Blancaneaux Lodge, but you must admit, MPR is magical.

"As Hummingbird Highway carves away from Belize's resort-laden sands, pavement dissolves into rutted dirt tracks and the dense jungle canopy starts to press in from all sides.  The tallest buildings pushing through the foliage are Maya ruins, and howler monkeys and macaws lurk in the ceiba trees.  Late at night, distant thunderstorms ring the horizon, broad sheets of lightning illuminating the mountains."

Cayo is the Place to Go in 2014 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The New York Times lists Belize, and gives MPR as an example, on their '52 Places to go in 2014' travel article.  They mention Blancaneaux and the recent flight expansions that Tropic Air has made.

"Twenty years ago, when Francis Ford Coppola opened Blancaneaux Lodge in western Belize, relatively few travelers had ventured into this small Central American country.  Slowly they arrived, many of them curious to witness the scenery that had captivated the film director, which he described in an email as 'completely remote, with a beautiful pristine river you could drink the water out of and the most star-studded night sky I had ever seen.'"

Mountain Pine Ridge Art Camp Video

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program of Belize released a great video about their Summer Art Camp, which is for youth between the ages of 14 and 17.  It starts next Monday, June 8th, and MPR is the base for the camp, so the youths will experience nature in one of Belize's nicest reserves.  There are a few spots left.  Rio On Pools is the star of the video that Help International put together.

"This camp is for youth ages 14 to 17 who want to tap into their inner artist and creative learning process.  All week long youth will be in the jungle, learning how to enhance their skills in painting, writing, cooking, and music. At night there will be campfires and games to build friendships and make memories that will last forever.  This is an incredible experience all for $200.  That includes your transportation there and back, your three meals for the day, accommodation, and supplies for classes.  If you are interested in joining us please let Nehanda Higinio know by cell phone at 624-9112 or email at nehandaorange@hotmail.com and she will get you registered and signed up!"

8 Adventurous Things To Do In Belize

8 Adventurous Things To Do In Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Travel Awaits has a nice article about many of the adventurous excursions found around Belize, and of course, Cayo sights make up the majority of the list.  They highlight Caracol and Actun Tunichil Muknal, along with Mountain Pine Ridge and the Garcia Sisters.  Definitely worth a read.

"Atop a plateau near the Guatemalan border rest the ruins of a city that was once the political powerhouse of the ancient Maya civilization. Dubbed Caracol, the nearly 25,000-acre archaeological site is known for its vast agricultural field system and sophisticated city planning. But despite how remarkable it is, Caracol offers visitors lots of freedom to wander around the site on their own. You can even climb the Sky Palace -- the tallest man-made structure in Belize. The site only receives about 10,000 visitors a year, so you won’t have to worry about running into crowds at this curious place. To get to Caracol, rent a car and make your way to the Chiquibul Forest Reserve in the Cayo District. Or, take the easy route and set up a guided tour with your hotel."

7 Reasons to Vacation in Belize

7 Reasons to Vacation in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Style Blueprint has a nice article about visiting Belize.  Surely in Cayo alone there are 700 reasons to visit.  Ka'ana gets a great shout out in the article, along with many of the sites around Cayo, like MPR, ATM, Caracol, and Big Rock Falls.  And of course the amazing food is talked about.  Worth a read.

"Travel to the western part of the country to hike through lush jungles and visit world-renowned historical sites. One option is to take a day tour into the Chiquibul Forest Reserve via the Mountain Pine Ridge to visit one of the largest Maya cities in Belize: Caracol. This ancient city served as the political center of the Maya population. As you explore Caracol, keep an eye out for howler monkey, keel-billed toucans, and other wildlife.

More adventurous travelers can explore historic cave systems, including the famous Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave in the Cayo District. You’ll hike for about 45 minutes through a wonderful nature reserve with numerous crystal-clear stream crossings. After a short swim, you’ll take a guided hike into the cave system, which still contains evidence of the Maya civilization, including ceramics, stoneware and skeletal remains."

4 Hard to Reach Destinations Worth the Trek

4 Hard to Reach Destinations Worth the Trek | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Good article from Chaa Creek about local attractions, 3 in Cayo, and 1 right down the road, that are off the beaten path.  MPR isn't that hard to get to, and it's more than worth the effort, for sure.  Cockscomb Basin, and it's Tiger Fern Trail, definitely deserves to be on there.  Maybe add Actun Chapat, Mountain Cow Cave, and the Santa Familia Sinkholes.

"The following remote locations in Belize aren't easy to reach, but they are well worth the extra effort. Check out our top exclusive adventures!  Belize is full of nature reserves, and Mountain Pine Ridge is one of the most heavily visited ones.  This reserve is home to spectacular attractions, including Caracol Mayan Ruins, 1,000 ft Waterfalls, Rio Frio Cave, Butterfly Falls, Big Rock Falls, and Rio On Pools just to name a few.  Guests can appreciate how rapidly one moves from broad-lead rainforest to pine forest, and the dirt roads in the area make for great stories, especially when it’s rainy.

Belize: A Honeymoon Hotspot

Belize: A Honeymoon Hotspot | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo is all over Lavendar Magazine's story of the perfect honeymoon in Belize.  William's Belize Shuttle, K'in Winik Tours, Parrot Nest Lodge, Caracol, MPR, and of course, Actun Tunichil Muknal

"The highlight of our time in the Cayo District was our experience at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave.  Though we visited several other cave systems, we both agree that ATM is by far the best. Not for the faint of heart, the strenuous trip to reach ATM requires a 45-minute jungle hike, crossing three rivers ranging from two to five feet deep.  Once at the cave, explorers swim into the mouth of the cave, tracing the route the Mayans used to take during religious rituals and sacrifices."

Amazing MPR Waterfalls

Amazing MPR Waterfalls | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Ambergris Today crowd came to the district known for its natural beauty, and ranked 5 waterfalls in Mountain Pine Ridge.  Big Rock Falls took first place, of course.  They got some great pictures.

"A visit to this magnificent spot is one of the highlights of any trip to the mountain Pine Ridge area.  The sound of the roaring falls echoes through the valley and you get really excited to reach them as the sounds of rushing water keeps getting more intense.  The tremendous waterfall takes your breath away as you bask in the beauty of the rushing water over a huge 150-foot rock formation.  Down below is a perfectly round pool which is an amazing experience climbing and swimming up to.  It is a breathtaking scene which provides a rush of excitement and caters to a refreshing swim."

The Volcanos of Belize

The Volcanos of Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Rio On Pools is one of the most beautiful spots in Belize, in Mountain Pine Ridge, one of Cayo's nicest national parks.  Joe Awe wrote about how Rio On Pools were volcanically formed, and how the meteor that hit off the Yucatan coast caused them. If you're on his site, you can also read about why the Maya represent the sun at night with a jaguar.

"Landmasses at one time were under the sea and at other times above the tide.  There is geological evidence that Belize was covered by water at least three times in its history.  The evidence of that is the remains of crustaceans deposits – calcium carbonate (limestone), the soil type which according to geologists, colonises sixty five percent of Belize’s land mass."

"Welcome to the final video in the Maya Adventure Challenge series.  Follow the YogaSlackers as they prowl through untamed jungles for three days and three nights non-stop in the Maya Mountain Adventure Challenge.  We'll be there every step of the way to bring you the planning, the execution, the failures, and the triumphs in a four-part video series."

Amazing Adventures in Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Arran and Alison Bevis, from Mountain Equestrian Trails, were interviewed recently, and they had a lot to say about Cayo, and Belize.  Many of the great spots in Cayo are talked about in the interview, including Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, the Green Iguana Conservation Project, and MPR.

"I can take any of my kiddos here: both of these places are easily accessible with small children.  At Rio On, there’s a variety of depths of water and many natural pools to choose from, so it’s great for swimming with the kids and sliding down the waterfalls.  The enormous Rio Frio Cave, with its huge, impressive entrance, is also a great attraction for all ages, perfect for some spooky exploration, and easy to get in-and-out-of."
