Belize Eco-Kids 2018 Summer Camp Takes Off!

Belize Eco-Kids 2018 Summer Camp Takes Off! | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Chaa Creek's 2018 Eco-Kids Summer Camp has kicked off.  They have daily updates on their site, so you can follow along and see what adventures the eco-kids are doing every fun-filled day.

Chaa Creek's Belize Eco-Kids 2018 Summer Camp started with a storm today July 16th, 2018 with 28 Belizean kids from different backgrounds partaking this year!  Arriving at the camp grounds entrance, fueled by camp songs and now being in the jungle itself, smiles could be seen stepping out of the bus one by one. After a final announcement by our wonderful and caring Counselor Lilly, the kids lined up and marched down Chaa Creek’s Howler trail into camp. The trail, which would normally be filled with howler monkey screams during the night, was now filled with cheerful laughter and footsteps heading towards memories that’ll last a life time."

Eco-Kids Camp 2016 - Final Farewells

Eco-Kids Camp 2016 - Final Farewells | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

This year's Eco-Kids Summer Camp has come to a close.  Alex Atkinson, former eco-kid, returned to do the blogging and photography, and he did a wonderful job.  Thanks, Chaa Creek, for once again bringing together a diverse groups of Belizean youths, and showing them the time of their lives.

"Then we moved on to the awards!  Our most ‘memorable’ camper was Mark ‘Mango’, while athletic, academic and swimming awards were also handed out to the campers.  And then… it was over, just like that. Bang, suddenly the campers were leaving with their parents, and as the trucks drove away we knew that was the last time we’d see some of them...  I can’t think of what to say now. What is there to say? The perfect bubble of happiness that had enveloped us all has finally popped. I suppose I’ll say my thanks...

To Jared – thank you so much for allowing me to butt in and potentially blow up your website. I’ve never enjoyed writing so much, and you’ve given me my first real taste of journalism – and photography! Seriously, thank you for everything. You’ll always be my biggest memory. (Only campers will get that joke!!)...

Chaa Creek Summer Camp was the very epitome of a perfect summer camp.  Thank you, everyone, from Docio and his family who fed us, to Jared who got the word out. (Imagine if I hadn’t put that comma – Docio and his family who fed us to Jared – ha ha!)

Eight Days at Chaa Creek Summer Camp, and there is only one fault I can find.  It didn’t last long enough."

Eco-Kids Summer Camp 2015 Wrap-Up

Eco-Kids Summer Camp 2015 Wrap-Up | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Eco-Kids Summer Camp has once again, come to a grand close.  The kids had a great time learning about the environment and their place in it.  Thanks, Chaa Creek!

"The 'best week of the year' as Mr. Levi likes to call it, always ends on a little bit of a somber note as the eco-kids see their parents arriving to pick them up and go home.  However, not all joy is lost!  Campers signed each other’s camp t shirts for memorabilia, helped clean up the camp by team, and had one last breakfast from Mr. Docio & co. before they performed their polished skits for their parents.  It wasn’t just the parents that took interest in all the hard work their children put in during the week, though. Various members of the Lodge at Chaa Creek staff hiked up to the River Camp to watch the children perform as well!  And of course, the Fleming family was front and center to see how the children enjoyed their learning experience and how they enjoyed being at the Macal River Camp."

Jonathan Lohr wrote this great Eco Kid essay for Chaa Creek's Eco Kids Summer camp.  He has a great quote in there too.

"I want to be an eco-kid because I want to save the environment and our earth...  I will quote a passage from a famous Sioux Indian poem, 'how can you buy or sell the sky, every part of this land is sacred to my people every shining pine needle is sacred every sandy shore every mist in the dark woods every clearing and humming insect is holy to me…' Chief Seattle."

Arel Martinez has some good ideas, and a green thumb, as explained in this Eco Kid essay.  That's a great title too.

"I am so proud because at our school we planted some plants that remind us how very important they are for us.  The teachers also came up with an extraordinary idea to clean up some areas in our village.  I felt so good doing these activities, which further encouraged me to become an eco-kid.   I want to be an example for others by keeping my environment clean.  My aim is to encourage other kids to reduce, reuse and recycle.  I am confident that if I dedicate myself to being an eco-kid, I can literally make a change in my environment by impacting other kids."

Julius Gilbert has a good Eco Kid essay.

"As an Eco conscious kid I practice recycling by putting cans in the recycling bin and send it of to get recycled.  When we go to the store and get plastic bags we reuse them for other things like garbage bags, and when we get boxes from the store we reuse them again for garbage.  I am very willing to be an Eco Kid because the environment is the most important thing to me."

Biana Gray has a good Eco Kid essay.

"I want to have fun and make new friends.  I want to learn more about nature and animals.  I also want to learn about recycling, reusing, and reducing.  My dogs are recycled dogs.  They are all abandoned dogs that we found on the street.  I reuse plastic bottles as water bottles for school.  I reduce the time I spend on the computer.  I want to learn about organic gardening, so me and my family can eat healthy.  The most important thing about being an eco kid is learning and having fun at the same time."

Clean and Green

Clean and Green | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Bullet Tree Falls' Vivica Jakeway sent in a great Eco Kid essay, entitled 'Clean and Green.'

"I believe that this summer camp is very important and is a great opportunity to learn about how to protect our environment and I also believe that everyone should make small organizations such as our organization called the Bullet Tree Environmental club.  The Bullet Tree Environment Club make rules with the Village Council such as no littering in the river, no killing of birds and other creatures that are endangered in the village of Bullet Tree Falls.  As a young teen I can see that we the younger generation can learn and encourage everyone to join in a movement to protect Mother Earth.  Being part of this Eco- kid program can teach me more about how to protect the environment and we should educate each other on how to protect and conserve our planet as well, because earth is full of marvelous creatures, exotic natural creations and we humans should learn how to appreciate it how to keep it clean and green."

Yo Creek's Andrea Carillo submitted a good essay for Chaa Creek's Summer camp.

"Water is also very important to everyone.  Water is needed for us to live without it we all will die.  We all need water to drink, to wash dishes, to wash clothes, to cook and to bathe.  So as an Eco kid I will help conserve water since it is very valuable.  I have observed that a lot of Belizeans like to buy and eat Chinese foods like: chowmein, chop suey, fried rice and soups.  Usually when these foods are cooked a lot of water is used for the boiling of vegetables and water is wasted in this way.  I have seen my mother using other methods to cook these same foods and not wasting so much water as others do.  As an eco kid I will share the method my mom uses to cook and not wasting the valuable water."

I am a Nature Lover

Maslin Hanson wrote a great Eco Kid essay for Chaa Creek's Eco Kid Summer Camp essay competition.  She starts it off strong.

"I believe that since I am a nature lover, I would make an excellent Eco Kid 2013.  As young citizens of this beautiful jewel we call home, there is a lot that it offers to us.  We have the prestigious barrier reef and atolls, the magnificent Maya mountain and rain forest and numerous ancient monuments, too many to mention.  As compared to other Central American countries we are blessed with a lot of wondrous beauty. Now, as very proud citizens of this jewel we need to encourage everyone to protect and take care of our natural heritage.  There is no need for us to waste and destroy what we have.  Instead we should be focus in building and preserving what we are blessed with.  We have the rich tropical rain forest filled with unique flora and fauna.  We should not allow anyone to cut our trees but encourage them to cut and plant trees back trees which would replace the ones they cut."

Phillip Flores has a great essay on why he wants to be an Eco Kid.

"One of my great passions is watching the wonderful flower and the vegetation and the different aromas from the different plants.  I enjoy the wonderful views, watching the bees and butterflies picking on the flowers.   At the age of five, I had the opportunity to visit a cave at Che Chem Ha.  It was an experience that I have not forgotten. I started the journey to the cave by riding a mule.  After riding for about 100 yard, I fell off the mule and I had to continue the journey by foot. What a wonderful experience it was to see what our ancestors left behind – the pottery, their religious beliefs and the way they lived. Given the opportunity to attend this camp would give me the opportunity to increase my knowledge of their existence, culture and traditions."

My Way to Chaa Creek | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Nuri Galicia wrote a great essay for the Chaa Creek Eco Kid Summer Camp.

"Being the only child in my family I am very optimistic that I will be part of Eco Kids 2013.  The reason why I want to go is bond with other children my age.  Also it will be a wonderful experience with Nature’s beauty for I enjoy birds and hiking.  At the campfire we share funny stories and jokes.  Through-out my life I have never been on horse back, so I am looking forward to have a ride on a horse.  This scholarship will allow me to learn more about gardening for at school we practice gardening.  It will be great for I will know unfamiliar species and expand my knowledge, for teachers can teach us only about name and their functions but not really show us the real plant.  If given an opportunity to be at the camp I will treasure every moment there."

Why I Love Nature

Why I Love Nature | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Here's another great Eco Kid essay for Chaa Creek's Eco Kid Summer camp.  Nice essay, Rodeli Mendez.

"I want to start by saying that there are many ways to be an eco-kid, but one main reason why I want to be one.  I want to be an eco-kid, well, because I just love nature.  I always dreamed of being taught about my environment and how to protect it.  I ask myself questions about the environment and do observations and research on it.  I want to find out if roaches bite, what types of bugs live on plants, how many types of medicinal plants we have in Belize, and many more things about science and my environment.  When I am not reading fairy-tales, I am busy reading my father’s science books that he uses to teach with."

Belize Eco-Kids: Camp is in Full Swing!

Belize Eco-Kids: Camp is in Full Swing! | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Read the account of the first half of this year's Eco-Kids Summer Camp.  The kids were kept super busy once again, learning about the Maya, traditional medicines, and conservation.

"We started early today, while the sun was rubbing its eyes and the bids were stretching. By the time the sun was truly up and about, so were we, and we started off with camp songs before a great breakfast of eggs, bacon, and fruit. Then, after cleaning up the plates, we had a quick fun game of John Wayne – a Dodgeball-esque game – and then moved onto Arts and Crafts.

Today, we made pencil/toothbrush holders out of toilet paper rolls, cutting and folding them until we had long oblong tubes perfectly sized for pens – then, we colored and drew on them until we had loads of cool figures – for example, the Lego Batman or weird, eye-opening geometric shapes.

Afterward, I went out and we hid loads of farm animal toys in the trail on the way to the Maya hike – on the way to the ruins, the campers had to find them with their newly learned bird-watching skill. They did amazingly good, actually, even if they missed the one in the scorpion nest."

"Since I like hiking, I think a good way to contribute in the preservation of our forest, birds and marine life is to become a Park Ranger.  Being a Park Ranger will give me the opportunity to help avoid activities like what happened at Nohmul and help to stop the distraction of endangered species of birds and other animals.  I will help save the green parrot, the scarlet macaw, the toucan, rose wood, mahogany tree and many more."

Why I want to reduce Global Warming

Why I want to reduce Global Warming | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Here's an Eco Kid essay from Brianne Rash.  Chaa Creek's Eco Kids Summer Camp starts this Saturday, and goes for 9 days.  The group will learn about biodiversity, natural resource conservation, traditional healing, and recycling too.

"An eco-kid uses land wisely so I can teach others that cutting down too many trees is a threat to many species and their habitat.  But to us as well because we need the trees.  The oxygen we breathe comes from the trees and without it we will die.  Slash and burn causes mudslides which is very dangerous because loose mud may fall on houses, kill people so it is dangerous to the environment."

Javier Bol submitted a nice Eco Kid essay.

"While I was reading a book on ecosystem I became interested in the biodiversity, natural resource, conservation and the three ‘r’ reduce, reuse and recycle.  I am very concerned about our ecosystem because we need to find a way of living, one that creates less pollution of the earth’s atmosphere and can lower the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of the earth called global warming."

It's wonderful to see people of all ages sharing an interest in conservation of biodiversity. I hope he keeps up his goal and becomes involved in conservation in the future.

My dad once asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. "Naturschützerin!" (conservationist) was my reply. I was ten years old.

Time has passed. I am now 22 and I am well on my way to become a conservation biologist! Thanks dad and David Attenborough for instilling a love for the natural world in me. A light that will never be dimmed.

Lucas Hunt has a good essay for this year’s Chaa Creek Eco Kids Summer Camp.

"I am an eco warrior.  I love animals especially sea animals.  I sometimes get to go diving with my dad.  I have my junior PADI and I got certified in Mexico.  I also have swum with wild manatees, bull sharks, sea turtles, and all those kind of things.  My house is located in the middle of the jungle.  In Belize they burn a lot of things, including the jungle, and I am against that because it is bad for the air and bad for nature."

11 year old George Hanson has a nice Eco Kid essay, and the title asks a question.

"When we turn off lights when there is no need to use it, we are saving energy. That is how we should be thinking.  We have no need to allow electricity to be burning because it will only create an additional expense for our families.  Secondly, water is life. It is a valuable resource.  If there is no water; then, there is no life.  We have no need to waste water we need to use it wisely.  While you are brushing your teeth turn off the water until you are ready to rinse your mouth and so forth."

Eco kid: Savior of the Belizean Rainforest! | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Rember Cerón has an essay submission for this year’s Chaa Creek Eco Kids Summer Camp.

"The rainforest is home to numerous species such as The Tapir, Scarlet Macaw, Toucan, etc.  It is the home of a wide variety of flora and fauna. In the anxiety of developing the world, and expanding to provide dwellings, humans are destroying nature.  When someone builds a house or a building, they destroy many animal species and plants; thus, contributing to the destruction of the rainforest.  Another way that humans are destroying the forests is through fires.  Being careless can cause any forest fire and so it destroys nature.  The only way how the rainforest can develop or grow more is by us taking care of it and planting more trees."

An Eco Kid essay for a Sunday afternoon.

"The first way of the environment is by recycling, planting trees, cleaning up our neighborhood.   When we recycle we will be saving a lot of our marine animals.   Animals like the dolphin, turtles and sharks.  When we throw plastic in the sea these animals eat the plastic and other garbage that floats around in the seas and oceans.   These animals cannot digest plastic or the plastic get stuck in their mouth or throat and the animal dies."

Laine Hoogstraten's comment, June 26, 2013 11:46 AM
hey kids, air pollution is a really big problem in Belize! Remember all the smoke in San Ignacio just a few weeks ago? Let's get educated about the environmental impact of burning to clear land, the damage caused by uncontrolled burning in terms of loss of wildlife habitat and rare jungle plants, and also address the impact of burning garbage on our health and environment. This generation doesn't have to carry the "torch" of ignorance into the future of Belize! Let's get smart about cleaner air.

"Eco- kids, the same in name, different in ways, but all with the same important mission, trying to help make our world a better, cleaner and healthier place for us all.  We Eco-kid work together for what we want to accomplish.  Ecosystems types are not only determined by their abiotic factors.  Of these soil is the most important.  Along the entire cost and bordering many cays lie extensive mangrove forests.  We also cannot forget the submerged habitat within the Barrier Reef, lagoon includes sea grass beds."

Here's a nice Eco Kid essay from Lillian Aguirre, who really captures the essence of what it means to be and Eco Kid.  She's going to love her time learning about nature at Chaa Creek.

"I want to be an eco-kid because I love nature and would like to help to protect the rainforest.  When I visit the rainforest, the shade from the canopy of tree refreshes me.  The smell of green trees relaxes me and the singing of the birds inspires me.  I hope and pray that I might find and fallow a jaguar’s paw prints on a trail or I may look up high above and see an owl staring at me.  If I am lucky I hope to see soldier ants carrying leave to build their homes wild pigs grunting by howler monkeys hanging on trees branches like thunder."
