New Orleans Jazz Fest Spotlights Belize

New Orleans Jazz Fest Spotlights Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize is the focus of this year's Cultural Exchange at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, which starts tomorrow.  The Garifuna Collective, TR Shine, Sweet Pain with Chico Ramos and Supa G, and the Wageirale Drummers are some of the Belizean performers.  Hope they have a great time sharing their wonderful music.

"This year, festival goers will have the opportunity to hear music, see demonstrations and learn about the history and customs of the small Caribbean country of about 300,000, which includes people of Maya, Mestizo, Creole, East Indian, Garifuna, Chinese, Lebanese, Mennonite and Caribbean descent. The country was under British rule until 1981. The national language is English."

The Galen Eagles Band played a free concert at the Cayo Welcome Center last night.  They did a fantastic set of Garifuna and Creole music.  Wish them the best as they head to Suriname.

"The Galen Eagles Band had a concert at the Cayo Welcome Center last night to celebrate their traveling to Suriname next week to represent Belize at the Caribbean Fiesta.  It was a great show!"

The Flavors of Belize Cookbook Giveaway

The Flavors of Belize Cookbook Giveaway | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

One of the food photographers that helped with The Flavors of Belize has a great article on the process, along with a couple of cool videos.  There's even a recipe for a hot pepper and onion salsa.  If you leave a comment, you might win a copy of the cookbook.

"There’s so many wonderful recipes to dive into within the book’s pages, and if you’ve never experienced Belizean food then you’re in for a treat. It’s a fantastic blend of distinct cultures, sometimes moving in one direction before coming back to another.  It’s Mayan, it’s Carribeean, It’s Asian, it’s Creole, and it’s all delicious.  In fact, several recipes from the book have become standards at our house."

Cayo Defines Ecotourism

Cayo Defines Ecotourism | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Chaa Creek was just picked as one of the 4 best eco-lodges that is within a short flight time from the United States.  The Salon.com article highlights their emphasis on ecology, preservation of biodiversity, and humanitarianism, while still being top notch.  They mention glamping at their Macal River Camp too.  Cayo wins again.  Congratulations, Chaa Creek!

"The Lodge at Chaa Creek allows guests a wide range of luxurious sleeping accommodations, from 'glamping' (glamorous camping, of course) in 10 well-appointed camp casitas on the Macal River to luxe tree-top suites with private Jacuzzis.  Guests can explore 365 acres of private nature reserve on foot, horseback, and canoe.  There aren’t many properties where visitors can pamper themselves in the spa, eat an organic Creole inspired breakfast, then learn about indigenous healing plants from a Maya tour guide, all before noon, but Chaa Creek does just that and they’ve done it with personality and attention to detail since 1981."

Belize 4th Happiest Country in the World

Belize 4th Happiest Country in the World | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize was again ranked one of the world's happiest countries, this time by the Travel Channel.  Belize ranked 4th on their top 10 happiest countries.  Picture is the Five Sisters Falls, taken at Gaia Riverlodge.

"With the second biggest barrier reef in the world, a laidback Caribbean lifestyle and a favorable climate, there’s a lot to be happy about in Belize.  But its cultural diversity is what is truly believed to make this country so content and welcoming: European, Creole, Hispanic and Mayan are some of the prevalent groups that form one harmonious culture here. Salbutes, panades, and garnaches are the food of kings!  Thanks go out to Ambergris Today for a great article on Belizean food, and the amazing diversity of it.

"One Belizean platter that definitely transcends all cultures in our beautiful country of ours has to be the Rice and Beans. I read somewhere that to truly sound like a local, you would have to say it on one word: “riceandbeanschickenandsalad”. The iconic Belizean dish - coconut white rice and red kidney beans served with stewed chicken and chunky potato salad and fried ripe plantains."
