The 10 Best Hikes in Belize

The 10 Best Hikes in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Trip Savvy compiled a list of the best hikes in Belize, and of course, Cayo hikes dominate the list.  From Mountain Cow Cave to Guanacaste park to the Black Hole Drop to the Don Elijio Panti Medicinal Trail, they have it, along with some trails in Cockscomb Basin.  Definitely worth a read.

"Belize is filled with beautiful secret beaches and breathtaking mountains that are just waiting to be explored. Here are the best hikes for adventurous travelers in Belize...

The Blue Hole National Park managed by the Audubon Society is rife with beautiful forests (and of course, blue waters) for visitors to explore. We recommend signing up for the Crystal Cave Tour to hike nearly an hour through the tropical forest before exploring the gorgeous Crystalline Cave within the jungle. You will notice caves are a big deal in Belize and well worth the effort to explore (especially when the interior looks like a crystal.) We recommend always signing up with a guide for these types of explorations, as repelling is involved, as well as more technical aspects of climbing. Plus, having a local guide is the best way to better understand a local culture."

10 Things You Must Do During Your Next Trip to Belize

10 Things You Must Do During Your Next Trip to Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo's activities are all over the cloud lately.  Around half of this latest Huffington Post list is in Cayo, and the Bocawina zipline, the longest in Central America, is close.  The Mayan sites are highlighted, as is Caves Branch, and all the activities one can do there, like the Waterfall Cave, cave tubing, and the Black Hole Drop.

"Belize is considered part of the southern Maya lowlands of the Mesoamerican culture area.  The area peaked in growth during the classic period dating from 250 AD to 900 AD, although the settlements date as far back as 400 BC.  Many of the excavations highlight preserved plazas, pyramids, temples, frescoes, tombs and ball fields."

Cayo's Old West Feel

Cayo's Old West Feel | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo got a great write up in International Living.  Yes, Everyone should visit Cayo, even though the only things we have here are Mayan archaeological sites, rivers, waterfalls, caves, hiking trails, butterfly farms, medicinal trails, ziplines, cenotes, canoe adventures, botanical gardens, granite pools, Lake Benque, ATM, award winning hotels...  Photo is from the Black Hole Drop adventure at Caves Branch Lodge.

"If you love lazy rivers, vast rolling hills, and fertile farmland and rainforests where you can test your gardening skills, Cayo is for you.  The heart of this area are the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, which both enjoy an Old West feel…but in a tropical frontiersman kind of way that you’ll find only in Belize.  Bargains can be found here, too—not only on real estate but on the huge amount of produce and fresh cheeses grown and produced here by local Mennonites."

Nightmares of Nature in Belize

Video of the day.  Naomi, the nightmare  of nature, filmed an episode in Belize.  She spent some time at the Belize Zoo, and did the Black Hole Drop while here.  Warning: if you watch the video, it will make you dumber.

"Naomi Wilkinson investigates the jungles and ancient temples of tropical Belize in search of more natural nightmares.  She meets the mini but mighty peccary, a peculiar pig-like creature with a rather nasty temper, spends the night at a deserted Mayan temple, to witness the terrifying screams of a mysterious jungle animal, and she descends into a deep, dark cave on the trail of the notorious whip spider, one of the creepiest creatures on Earth."

Belize's Wild Interior

Belize's Wild Interior | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo, referred to as 'Belize's Wild Interior,' got a great write up in the adventure section of Men's Journal magazine.  They mention Caracol, Xunantunich, the Black Hole drop, and Waterfall Cave, among other great activities.  Happy tourist season!

"Avoid the cruise-ship crowds at Altun Ha and head to Xunantunich and Caracol, deep in Cayo district.  On a hilltop seven miles outside the backpacker hub of San Ignacio, Xunantunich is reached via a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River and a hike.  The ceremonial center, including the 130-foot-tall El Castillo pyramid, has been restored to its eighth-century glory.  For a more strenuous outing, trek to the lost city of Caracol. Buried in Chiquibul National Park and only partially excavated, the 15-square-mile complex has the stones (including the 141-foot-high Caana pyramid, still the country's tallest structure) to prove its former might."

"Ian Anderson's Caves Branch Jungle Lodge offers one of the most extreme rappelling adventures in Belize with their Black Hole Drop.  It's around an hour hike to a huge cenote that you rappell 300 feet into.  You then have a delicious lunch, and explore the cenote.  There are caves in it too."
