'Dent' the Keel-Billed Toucan - Rescue Highlight

Video of the day.  Dent was successfully released, but before he was, Scarlet Studios stopped by Belize Bird Rescue to make a little video about his short recovery time there.  Thanks, BBR!

"While passing through the Belize Bird Rescue earlier this year, I had the chance to meet this curious little keel-billed toucan with a dent in his beak, and even got the opportunity to feed him! Dent has since been re-released thanks to our friends at the Belize Bird Rescue, and is doing well!

As with all toucans, the bill of the Keel-Billed Toucan is specially designed for eating fruit efficiently, while maintaining a light weight to accommodate flight. The inside is reinforced with a crisscross of lightweight rods made of bone. The “tooth-like” protrusions help toucans catch and grasp food in the bill."

Belize Bird Rescue Newsletter

Belize Bird Rescue Newsletter | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize Bird Rescue has released their first 2015 newsletter.  Read all about the wonderful work they've been involved in, as well as the new Parrot Registration Programme.  Thanks, BBR, for all you've been doing!

"2014 saw a record number of intakes at BBR with 236 birds coming through our doors.  Because of our work with the Captive Wildlife Programme, many of those intakes were parrots (106), but as the only avian rescue and rehabilitation centre in Belize, we help whatever species comes our way.  2014 brought us 53 raptors, 21 waterbirds and 56 songbirds.  It was also record-breaking year for barn owls: 24 of these much-maligned rat-eaters visited BBR, with all but 3 them being successfully released back into the wild."

The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic has a new set of veterinary students visiting for some hard core learning and some fun too.  The visited the Belize Zoo, Xunantunich, and visited Belize Bird Rescue so far.  A study vacation sounds like a win/win situation.

"BWRC is exited to welcome our first spring break group of veterinary students from UFL for an intensive 8 days of learning about wildlife in Belize, conservation, rescue and rehabilitation!  As the pic shows we did not get out of class untill dark. So much to do in so little time :)"

Releasing Wild Yellow Head Parrots

Video of the day.  A short documentary on the effort to save parrots from poaching.  Protect the Chiquibul, and the parrots within.  Thanks to Belize Bird Rescue, Programme for Belize, and all the other amazing NGO's that helped the effort!

"In 2016, a team of conservationists, The Belize Bird Rescue, and Programme for Belize joined forces to protect endangered Yellow Headed parrots where they are being threatened by staggering numbers of poaching and habitat loss.  Working together, field researchers managed to pull 14 nestling parrots in dire threat of being poached, where they were raised in safety until they could be released in perfect health later that year."

Belize Bird Rescue: Stork Storkers Club

Belize Bird Rescue: Stork Storkers Club | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood story to start the day.  The Belize Bird Rescue successfully captured and relocated the Jabiru stork that was on the runway at the Philip Goldson airport, causing problems for landing planes.  It was a concentrated effort, and was met with success.  Great work!

"Cue the Belize Wildlife Conservation Network (BWCN) response team (pause for ooo’s and aaah’s) We are ready to spring into action at a moments notice, just like Spiderman. So, armed with nets, gloves, cages, crates and blankets, plus numerous representatives from Belize Forest Department, Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic, ISIS, Belize Humane Society and Belize Audubon Society, we launched ourselves at Belize City."
